I had retired to bed by 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve, but heard lots of fireworks going off all around the village.

It's ten years now since we gave up the TV; we don't miss it. We still get the occasional letter from TVL, but we're £1.5K-odd better off in today's terms than we otherwise would be.

One of the women I work with has a daughter currently at Bournemouth university. She said the other day that daughter had said one of her friends shares a house with a lad whose dad used to be in a band, but she couldn't remember the name - something like Durex. Mother managed to piece together that she meant Duran Duran and the lad in question is the son of John Taylor.

One of my USian chums is a massive DD fan and has been in love with JT since she was in high school. She got to meet him at a book signing a couple of years ago and gave him a copy of her novel called "Ordinary World". So my Kevin Bacon moment is a complete loop, with one friend linked to JT and another to JT's son.

I'll just go with shaking hands with Martin Sheen, which gets me pretty much straight to anyone.

I've worked out before I'm only three degrees from Mr Depp: Someone I went to school with is now a journalist, who interviewed Keira Knightley for a glossy magazine, who also worked on Pirates. My brush with fame. :-)
