You're welcome to repost this at a community I maintain called co_workers_suck and get more input. I hate lunch stealers and as I take my meals seriously can feel your pain.
At work I took to putting things in a brown paper bag and stapling it with one staple, for some reason if they don't know what's in there and it's stapled, they feel worse about opening it. I also used to put the name of a high ranking person on my food (like a manager) and it would be left alone. A lunch bag with a zipper used to work for me as well; it can comments, but no one would go to the trouble (and potential danger of getting caught).
Next time I'll try the staple trick. It's such a small office that putting a higher up's name on it wouldn't do any good, but I can see something as simple as a staple acting as a deterrent :) Thank you for the suggestion!

i'd say, if you do bring things in, write your name on it.
i'd also probably leave a note on the fridge:
to the person who ate my sandwich the other day,
that was my lunch, but because you ate it, i didn't get anything to eat.
thanks.
in future, if you're hungry, please ask. i don't mind sharing.
