Actual tweets versus Instagram stuff does get you more followers. Interacting with people and following them do, as well. I have a friend who refuses to follow people she doesn't actually know in real life... but how's that gonna help??

If it makes you feel any better, I've been on Twitter for years and only have about 500 followers, most of whom don't interact with me. Eh.

When you signed up, did you set it up so you could be seen by anyone and promoted by Twitter? (Similar to opting out of the autobots on LJ that occasionally make one's random posts a 'recommended' blog to read.)

I think my twitter settings are whatever the default is - I can't remember messing around with the settings at any point :-p
