Title: Tell Me Your Wish (Chapter 3)
Pairing/Focus: Sunggyu/Woohyun, friendship!Woohyun/Myungsoo
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Woohyun doesn't believe in fairy tales. So when he buys an old golden lamp for a history project, the last thing he expects is, well, Myungsoo.
“You’re an idiot.”
“Shut up, Myungsoo!” Woohyun grits his teeth irritably. He shifts uncomfortably on the concrete step, leaning his back against the iron railing. “Why are you even here?”
“Moral support?” Myungsoo smirks, smoothly hopping up onto the railing and casually swinging his feet back and forth.
Woohyun just huffs, picking up the guitar lying beside him and gently strumming a chord. The strings feel natural under his fingers- easy- like walking or breathing. He strums another chord, humming along. Somehow he recognizes all the notes of the guitar, all the different fingerings, and how to play music just by hearing it; pretty impressive, since he had only picked up the guitar yesterday. (But it’s not like he didn’t have a little help…)
“So is this guy coming or what?” Myungsoo squints against the sun that was beginning to shine into their eyes. “If we waited out here this long for nothing, I’m seriously going to kill you.”
“He’ll come, I’m sure of it.” Woohyun’s eyes flicker the door behind them, mindlessly picking out a melody on the strings. “He leaves about this time every day.”
“Creep,” Myungsoo scoffs. “So do you stalk him around school, or what?”
Woohyun feels his ears getting red. “N-no, I just happen to leave at the same time a lot of days-”
“Woohyun, you suck at lying.”
“Well, you suck at life.”
“Wow. I am awestruck by your astounding wit. Please teach me how to be like you,” Myungsoo replies, voice flat and emotionless.
The two boys are sitting on the steps in front of Woohyun’s school, where they had been waiting for quite some time. Woohyun had decided to sit out front afterschool just in case a certain eye-smiling senior decided to pass by. You know, just in case.
“Oh my god, Woohyun. You should star in one of those cheesy dramas where the main character spends the entire season trying ridiculous things just to get his crush to notice him.”
“Is that supposed to be an insult?”
“Is it?” Myungsoo counters, smirking.
“Yah- I am not going out of my way to be noticed, okay.”
“Are you actually being serious right now?” Myungsoo sighs, rolling his eyes. “You used one of your wishes from a magical genie to be able to play guitar because you know that Sunggyu loves music and is trying to start a band. If that’s not desperate, I don’t know what is.”
“Playing guitar is a very useful skill!” Woohyun states defensively, clutching the instrument closer to his body.
“Uh-huh,” Myungsoo says (rather patronizingly, if you ask Woohyun). “Whatever you say.”
Woohyun starts to turn around to retort, but then the door opens behind them and he ducks his head, abruptly starting to strum a song that he had heard on the radio that morning. He keeps his eyes on his fingers, trying to appear as relaxed and as cool as possible. He catches Myungsoo snorting softly but ignores it.
He hears footsteps getting nearer and nearer, and then-
“Woohyun?”
Woohyun lifts his head and feigns a look of surprise. “Sunggyu?”
“Hi,” Sunggyu says, stopping right in front of him. Woohyun decides that the wait was definitely worth his while as Sunggyu smiles, his eyes creasing and his white teeth catching the gleam of the setting sun. “I didn’t know you were still here.”
“Yeah. I decided to stick around for a while. Breathe some fresh air, you know.” Woohyun can see Myungsoo making a face in his peripheral vision, but he keeps his eyes trained on Sunggyu’s smile.
“Oh, that’s cool. I just had to ask Ms. Kim a few questions about the project.” Sunggyu opens his mouth to speak again, but then his eyes land on the object in Woohyun’s hands. “Hey! I didn’t know you played guitar!”
Woohyun smiles, hoping he looks cool and not as completely nervous as he feels. “Yeah, I don’t bring it out much; I usually just play in my room at home.” It isn’t technically a lie, right? He had played in in his room before. “Before” meaning…last night.
Myungsoo shifts his weight on the railing and Sunggyu turns around, startled by the sound. “Oh, hello there! I’m Sunggyu. I don’t think we’ve met before…?”
Myungsoo just smiles sweetly, and Woohyun is utterly shocked. How is this adorable, innocent boy with a glowing smile the same irritating genie that’s been making Woohyun go insane for the past couple of days? It’s absolutely incredible how completely Myungsoo’s demeanor just changes. It’s almost too good, Woohyun thinks, as Myungsoo turns to Sunggyu.
“No, I don’t think we have. I’m Myungsoo. It’s so nice to meet you, Sunggyu.” And he even gets off the railing to give Sunggyu a polite bow. “I’m just here to keep Woohyun company.”
“Oh? That’s so kind of you. Are you two good friends?” Sunggyu asks.
“The best.” Myungsoo meets Woohyun’s eyes and smiles again, only this time Woohyun can see the evil glint in his eye. That sneaky little- “Woohyun’s just been practicing his guitar. He’s really good,” he adds, blue eyes widening.
Sunggyu’s face lights up, and Woohyun has the urge to lift an arm to shield his eyes from the beauty. “Woohyun, can I hear you play?”
Woohyun’s cheeks flood with color. “Oh, I don’t know…I’m not very good…”
“Oh, stop lying,” Myungsoo cuts in. “He’s amazing. Let Sunggyu listen to you, Woohyun!”
So Woohyun bends over the instrument hesitantly, shyly picking out the song that he’d been practicing all day. He doesn’t even have to pay attention to his fingers; they seem to know exactly what they’re doing on their own. Instead he focuses on Sunggyu’s face out of the corner of his eye. Sunggyu closes his eyes and leans back while Woohyun plays, a little smile playing on his lips as he sways to the rhythm.
Oh god. This is- my heart cannot handle this. Why does he look so attractive right now?
After Woohyun finishes, there is a beat of silence before Myungsoo cheers and Sunggyu opens his eyes and claps enthusiastically.
“Oh my god! That was amazing! Woohyun, you’re really good!” Woohyun would keep playing guitar forever if Sunggyu kept looking at him like that, with admiration in his shining eyes. “Where did you learn to play like that?”
“Oh, you know,” Woohyun shrugs, lifting a shoulder. “Just…natural talent, I guess.”
“Well, however you learned, you have some serious talent.” Sunggyu’s eyes are still on him, and Woohyun feels his heart melting slowly in his chest. Sunggyu stands up and slings his backpack onto his back. He starts down the stairs before pausing and turning back hesitantly. “Hey, Woohyun?”
“Yeah?”
“Have you ever thought about being in a band?” Woohyun’s heart can barely take the way Sunggyu is speaking shyly, chewing on his lip.
“A band?”
“Yeah, a band. See, my friends and I were thinking about starting a band together, and we were looking for a lead guitarist. Interested?”
Woohyun smiles. “Yeah. That sounds cool.”
His statement is rewarded with the brightest grin yet, and Woohyun has to fight the urge to sigh dreamily at the sight. “Awesome. I’ll ask the guys tomorrow and see what they think. I can’t believe we’ve already found a guitarist! And an incredible one, at that.” Sunggyu lifts a hand in a salute. “See you tomorrow, Woohyun. And it was nice to meet you, Myungsoo!”
Myungsoo waves brightly as Sunggyu heads out into the parking lot.
“I see you grinning like an idiot over there,” Myungsoo accuses, swinging himself back onto the railing.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Woohyun replies, biting his lips but not able to hide the enormous smile on his face.
Myungsoo just groans and rolls his eyes, all traces of the cute innocence gone. “You are so disgustingly head-over-heels in love I don’t know whether to throw up or punch you. Or both.”
