Four

"What happened?"

Jaejoong blows a lock of hair out of his face but the wind blows it back. "It's been two weeks and you're still asking that?"

"Ever since that night, you've been flinching every time you change your clothes, so I'm still gonna ask you." His books are left open and abandoned, nestled in the grass. Changmin eyes the eldest steadily. He'd practically memorized all the colors of the bruise blooming across Jaejoong's ribs.

Jaejoong lifts an eyebrow, lips wet. "You watch me when I change?"

Changmin stutters and stammers while his face flushes bright pink, frustrated that the other can distract him so easily. Jaejoong leans against the tree and takes notes from his textbook, smiling to himself.

Changmin picks the pieces of his dignity off the ground. "He ended it again, didn't he?"

No answer.

"He did this to you, didn't he?"

Jaejoong wraps his fingers around the pencil tightly and smiles. "I don't know what you're talking about."

Changmin nearly bites through his bottom lip. "Jaejoong."

He pouts. "Minnie?"

He roughly combs his fingers through his hair and grits his teeth, successfully completing a cycle in which Changmin regrets ever opening his mouth and caring in the first place. "Why do you--"

"I'm tired of studying." To punctuate, Jaejoong closes his books and tosses them to the ground. When he gets on all fours, Changmin is at a loss for words and he forgets who he is when Jaejoong crawls toward him with a sly curve of his lips.

Swatting away the books in his path, Jaejoong laughs low and naughty, crawling into Changmin's lap before the youngest can regain his senses, pushing him back against the grass but not without a struggle. A weak, half-assed struggle, but a struggle nonetheless.

The sky is blue and pure. Changmin stares up sightlessly, skin tingling and too amazed to move. Jaejoong nuzzles into Changmin's chest, lying flush against the other with one leg between Changmin's legs, fingers exploring the fabric along his sides.

"You're hard and soft all at once." Jaejoong breathes, pressing in closer as if Changmin's chest were a pillow. His hair tickles Changmin's chin. It smells like sandalwood.

Changmin gulps. You have no idea.

"You're in here a lot more often lately."

Changmin laughs it off. "It's easier to focus."

Junsu purses his lips suspiciously. "You're a genius. You can focus anywhere."

"That's stupid." Changmin pretends his organic chemistry book is incredibly interesting.

The door opens and closes and Yunho walks in, shaking his book bag off his back. He looks at Changmin curiously. "You're here again?"

Junsu throws his hands up. "See?"

Changmin raises an eyebrow. "Am I not wanted here?"

"No." Junsu says simply. He earns a thump in the head, via Yunho.

"It's just interesting." Yunho dumps all the contents of his bag on his bed across the room.

Changmin stops writing but doesn't look up.

"Junsu's a lot more distracting than Jaejoong."

Junsu sticks his tongue out behind Yunho's back.

Yunho continues, "Why haven't you studied in your room lately? Or at least in the library."

"It's too quiet. Like a morgue." Changmin wrinkles his nose.

"The library or your room?"

"The library. My room is never quiet." The deafening roar of my own thoughts is unbearable.

Yunho regards him carefully. "If Jaejoong is a bad roommate, then you should talk to him."

"I tell Yunho everything that's wrong with him." Junsu nods to himself. Yunho chucks an eraser across the room.

Junsu snorts. "So what, does he talk a lot? Is he a mouth-breather?"

Changmin says nothing and flips a page because he'd feel nothing short of crazy explaining how Jaejoong was much more than a bad roommate, but amazing.

Chewing on his thumbnail, the eldest watches Changmin patiently. "Ask him to stop."

Changmin looks up. "Stop what?"

"I hear noises sometimes. From your room." Yunho says quietly. Junsu suddenly finds the lint on his quilt very interesting. "It's more often than last year and it obviously bothers you when you can't feel comfortable entering your own room with your guard down. I bet he'd take that Yoochun guy elsewhere if you just asked. He seems reasonable. "

"Reasonable." Junsu scoffs, rubbing bits of rejected cotton between his fingers. "When he's not roaming around half naked talking like a confused ghost."

Changmin flips a page. "He's just been acting strange lately. He'll get normal soon."

"In the meantime, you could ask him to at least pretend to be normal in the room you share." Yunho points out.

Changmin nods noncommittally, flips another page, ignores the way Junsu stares at him on the other side of the bed and exchanges glances with Yunho, flips three pages, what the hell am I reading?

"I'm evicting you."

Changmin stares at Junsu. "What?"

And then the other is pulling on Changmin's arm, forcing him to stand up and letting all his books and paper fall to the floor. "You're gonna tell him now." Junsu shoves him toward the door. "Or I'm evicting you for life."

"He won't really, but he'll try. Don't anger him, Min." Yunho grins.

Before he can try and throw out some lame excuses or perhaps beg, Junsu had shoved him out of his room and smack into the door of Changmin's room. Junsu disappears and locks the door to his room, leaving Changmin stranded in the hallway. Good friends are hard to find.
