. . .and yet the first thing to came to mind for me was that if Kaiji is shopping in the clearance section, his clothes aren't going to be plain; Kaiji's clothes would be all those crazy-cut, crazy-colors, weird catch-phrase shirts that nobody else buys that end up in clearance sections. I imagine this would only be worse in Japan, which already has rad fashion.

Hahaha. XD I think he probably does have shirts like that; I think the animators just stuck to a muted red and blue palette for artistic reasons. He does spend the first half of the series in some kind of military jacket with lots of flags and patches on it, and the second half in a shirt that has "DERSV 38 ERAMU" on it for no reason that I can discern. But nothing really flashy or likely to stand out, which is why I described it as plain.

I've never shopped in Japan, so I don't know, but I could actually imagine it backfiring? Since colorful phrase and patterned clothing is so fashionable and trendy, it'd be more expensive, while plain, nondescript clothing would be cheaper? it certainly would cost less to make. I don't know. XD Either way, I'm sure Kaiji just grabs whatever is cheapest.
hahah, that's possible! In my experience though, it's not like most department stores stock down-the-line trendy clothing and normal clothing. It's going to be pretty much ALL trendy, and the ones that didn't turn out popular are going to end up on clearance. More than likely the "plain" clothes would be bought up, since anybody going into those stores for plain clothes would only have the one or two options, amid the sea of ~trendy~, so they could get away with making those expensive/regular price.
I haven't shopped in Japan for years, but I did work in Macy's for a bit. And apparently I...like talking about marketing? NOT SAYING YOUR EXPLANATION IS WRONG or anything. I-I just like picturing Kaiji trying to find something not eye-searing to wear |Da
