Heh. I had almost exactly the same reaction, right down to the GEAS comparision. However, did you notice how well the at-will/encounter/daily paradigm maps onto the old GEAS material? I think I'm going to run a game set in Gwynelad.

You know, that could really be a fun world to run in. Btw, you should come try out IFGS one of these days, we are converting a bunch of old GEAS games over to IFGS and starting up Gwynelad again. :) So far we have Book of Light and Betrayal and some mini quests converted. I'm working on All's Fairy this week with Will J. :)

Sounds like it could be fun. I'm a bit burnt on 'gard right now, what with office and running Rakis. Could be just what I need :)

The fighting is different but fun. And the RPing is great. We have a siege bargame coming up that I'm producing. I can give more info to you this weekend if you want.

Your comment about equal but same and fine balance reminds me more of MMO's than table-tops. I heard (Penny Arcade?) that an RPG based on D&D4 is inevitable (probably soon). So it makes me wonder if thats the paradigm being used by those who created the new system.

What happens to the whole D20 open-source thingy now?

It is obvious from the design that 4e is meant to be MMOish. I had thought it was an attempt to appeal to the WoW audience, but the idea that an RPG/MMO would be based on it seems even more par for the course. D&D Online blew chunks.

The new "4e Game System License" is due out this week and I have no idea what to expect. They promised that 4e would still be a d20 game, which I suppose technically it is...

Actually, I realize, you might be thinking of D&D Insider. Its supposed to be Wizards new full D&D Web support that includes the "D&D Table Top" which lets people play with each other online.

Huh. I'm sorry to hear this, honey, especially given how excited you were for its arrival. Perhaps things will change once you play?

I hope so. The other reservation I have is that it is SO obviously combat oriented. They tucked informational and roleplaying abilities in the corners where they could, but overall, its a battlesystem. Its would be like trying to do a role-playing game with Amtgard rules... its just not made for it.

More reports after I get into it.

on that note, though. I heard they really streamlined combat to reduce battle time. Something I know we have had an issue with in the past.
