In my last year at Quantime, before it was totally subsumed into SPSS, a manager of the programming and testing function was recruited from Chicago to move to London. His girlfriend/wife (not sure whether they were married) had to be found a job here too, so they made her head of testing and my manager. Instead of reporting to her bf/husband, she (on paper) was managed/evaluated by SPSS's technical VP in Chicago. She should have been found a job elsewhere as she was not a great manager, and she knew nothing about UK employment law. When I'd found a new job, and gave notice, she said, "Oh, that's convenient for us. We were planning to hire someone else, have you train them, then lay you off." That is illegal here and SPSS would have been in for some big damages if they'd done it. Then they laid her off. Didn't replace her either, as she did nothing constructive around the office.

I think it's pretty cool that you were Robert's boss, too.
