Dress Codes at work

His entry reminded me of high school. We were require to have the hems of our skirts no higher than knee high. One student - not me, I swear - asked the same question you did and the rule got changed instantly.

For the new rule we had to kneel on the floor. If our hems did not at least touch the floor we were in violation and violations were not tolerated.

Mid 1970's a friend of mine had a corporate interview. She asked me to ask my Dad - the only corporate person we knew - that if a woman was going in for an interview, could she wear pants if her legs were really ugly? He struggled with it because pants on a business interview was so taboo. I think he finally said no. Ugly legs were better than pants.

The good old days... not.

About 15 years ago, I was working at a small software consulting company. A developer comes in for an interview. Jason's been working for Safeco Insurance, who had (have?) an extremely rigid dresscode: even the developers in the back office who never see customers have to wear a jacket and tie. Jason asks Dan, the president, what our dresscode was. Dan scratched his beard and thought for a moment, then said, "You must cover your genitals at all times." Jason got the job and was usually seen in shorts and t-shirts.
