Lis Sladen was the Doctor's companion when I first started watching Doctor Who, and she & Tom Baker made me love this quirky sci-fi show with very little budget but lots of imagination.
The Doctor would breeze into the middle of some extraordinary situation and Sarah Jane would face it all with aplomb, and somehow the day would always be saved just before the eerie theme music ended the episode.
For years I had a tape cassette (not video cassette: tape cassette) of the audio of that episode when Sarah Jane had to leave the TARDIS at last because, after going so many places and doing so much, the Doctor had to go somewhere she could not follow.
Goodbye, Elizabeth Sladen, and fare well, Sarah Jane Smith. Until we all meet again some sunny day.
