Britannia was always waging a war somewhere, against some nation or another, always trying to gain new colonies and usually succeeding. Japan breaking free from her was something that had never happened before. As long as Zero and his Knight are there though, Japan will stay free.

Zero and his Knight? I might be wrong, but it sounds like you mean they won out the freedom all on their own.

Zero was the leader of the Resistance. Before him, the Japanese opposition weren't able to mount a sizeable assault on Britannia and were steadily losing ground. Zero changed that.
