Progressive rock was a musical style that peaked around the early 1970's, and attempted to blend rock music with outside influences like classical, jazz, folk, etc. There isn't really a single, all-encompassing definition of prog rock. Most progressive rock tends to be more musically complex than other rock music, and most prog rock fans see this complexity as a defining trait.

Because of this complexity and intellectualism, progressive rock in the 1970's was billed as pretentious and indulgent because it was music meant for listening, not dancing. Popular bands considered to be progressive rock include Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and Pink Floyd.

it fails to list the bands i really love (ie: portishead, massive attack, tricky, zero 7, goldfrapp, björk, sneaker pimps, fiona apple, poe, etc.)
