(With thanks to enjoythe_ride for helping with PB help, said PB is not actually shirtless in scene. Thank you.)

He was going to go to Miami. Not even bother heading back to San Francisco before he left. What was the point?

He cleared his mind, focused on where he wanted to be, and blinked out of sight.

When he landed...he wasn't in Miami. He didn't know where he was.

It felt familiar, though. Not in a good way, but there was something about it. He glanced around the dark corridor and immediately threw his senses on edge. Tried to pick up on anyone that might be approaching, hiding. He hated what he felt. His head rose as the knowledge of where he was came to him. He watched a demon appear in front of himself and stepped back.

The demon smirked and stepped towards Shade. He was in his human form and smelled of recent death. Shade stepped backwards as his fists tightened at his side. "Shade," he said softly. "It's been awhile."

"Erris," Shade replied. He wasn't scared of the demon. Far from it. He just hated him. Erris had been one of the many to torture him when he used to live in the underworld. Where he was once again. Where he hadn't returned to and hadn't intended on returning to.

"Took me awhile to find you," Erris said. He kept his hands behind his back and moved closer to Shade.

"Hey, not my fault you're incompetent."

Erris moved to shoot a fireball at Shade, but Shade saw it coming so he blinked out of the way. "You killed Liat," Erris shouted.

"Sore about that? Were you wantin' a piece of it?" Shade smirked and moved as they slowly walked circles to avoid each other. "She was fun, but nothin' special."

Erris smiled, ignoring the comment. "She offered you something good, rat. You turned that down?"

"She offered me a lot," Shade shrugged. "I didn't turn her down." He smirked, looking to irritate Erris.

The other demon clenched his jaw and jumped for Shade. Shade had let his guard down and wasn't expecting it. Erris had him by the throat, slowly squeezing it. "She would have led you to everything," he hissed. "Real power. A side. All you had to do was follow her!"

"Wasn't in my best interest," Shade wheezed out. He wasn't fighting Erris off, but was waiting for an opportune moment.

"Wasn't...you piece of shit! You're nothing! Don't you know that? Slime? We called you Shade for a reason, rat! You don't deserve the powers you have!"

"What do you care?"

"There was a plan. I was going to help you."

"Help me?" He stared at the other demon and it only took him a moment longer to catch on. "You. You were the plan."

"Yes, me." Erris hand tightened on Shade's throat, threatening to pop it altogether.

"What? You and the bitch were going to trick me into going full demon and somehow rise above me? You really think that would happen?" He centered all his energy - mind and strength - and shot a fireball at Erris' arm then shoved him away. He jumped off and shook his head. "You can't overpower me like this, how do you expect-" A mind numbing pain shot through his brain and chest. With an agonizing scream he fell to his knees. Light burned his vision and he couldn't take sight of what was going around him.

He couldn't see the stones circled around him and the blackness streaming from Erris' hands into Shade's chest. He couldn't hear the chanting around him, circling him. The screams faded. Not because the pain was gone, but because there was too much pain to summon the strength to scream anymore. The demons that surrounded Shade continued their chant and the colors flowing between himself and Erris turned. From the deepest dark to light. A very bright light. The demons all shaded their eyes from it and turned away, continuing their chant.

Then it stopped.

There was silence. No more lights. Nothing.

Erris and the other demons watched as Shade fell onto his side, laying on the dark ground. He was still twitching slightly from the pain. An echoing groan was softly coming from his throat. They all waited. Waited and watched until Shade turned over on his back. The twitching, the groaning, went away.

After laying there for a long time Shade's eyes opened. They were pitch black and unmoving. Every demon in the room applauded. Erris moved to crouch beside Shade. He leaned into Shade's ear.

"You really thought we'd let a trophy like you choose your lifestyle? You're going to be our Source. We'll take over. Then? We'll kill you."
