Being on the run wasn't so bad. You got to see lots of new places: meet the locals, sample their cuisine. And if you had to sometimes take the roundabout route to grab a bite to eat, well, a bit of shade wasn't unwelcome on a blisteringly hot day like this ( ... )

Despite looking completely nonchalant, even absentminded, the Doc had been quick to notice the lone man coming for him, looking ready to pass by - his usual routine for this sort of confrontation involved making some half-assed generalizations as he passed by to get his attention, ready to offer a reading for a low, low price -

But it didn't seem necessary; the guy was actually going to stop. How's business, he scoffed inwardly, though on the outside he was all buttery smiles and charming demeanor. Well, as charming as he could be in a shadowy alleyway playing with tarot cards. "Business? Just fine, my good man! The heat keeps the juju flowing strong. Makes it easier to read people, yeah." He slipped his feet off the table and leaned forward, steepling his hands on top instead, barely even glancing at the big old bag slung over the tourist's shoulder. And he was definitely a tourist.

"Coming or going, my friend?" he asked, gesturing briefly to the bag.

He didn't know about juju, but he definitely felt like he was being read. His new friend was relaxed and good-humored, friendly as any salesman could be, but there was a focus to the way he straightened, leaned in, a clever gleam to his eye. Grimmer liked him already.

"Oh, just passing through." He patted his duffel with a chuckle, and then held out the hand to shake. "Wolfgang Grimmer, how do you do? Beautiful city, by the way, everyone is so friendly. At night, music rolls through here like a warm fog. And the food is great! I just had this sweet girl make me one of those, you know, fried dough things? Marvelous. Anything else you can recommend me to try while I'm here?"

"They're beignets," he said idly, the heat making his head just loopy enough that he sort of started craving them - that was, until his shadow gave him a sharp nudge from the ground and launched him back into reality. He beamed, "Well, Wolfgang - that German? - most tourists come for the food and the music. Looks like you got the food part down."

He leaned back and hooked his hands behind his head, hat tipping forward a bit to shade his eyes. Nice. "Other tourists come for people like me."
