Chapter II

Donna held onto The Doctor’s arm tenderly, as she led him towards the captain’s chair. As they came ‘round the console the TARDIS shook violently as another missile exploded outside. It felt like it had crashed outside the very door. The Doctor tumbled to the grating despite her best efforts to keep him on his feet. She contorted her body to stop from crashing on top of him, bruising her hip in the process. She helped him up and her heart clenched harshly to see him so helpless but she had to get him going. They had to get off this forsaken planet or they were both going to be in a whole lot more trouble than they were already.

“Doctor” Donna’s voice trembled. She cleared her throat and tried again. “Doctor…we have to get out of here. Can you fly the TARDIS without seeing?” Donna’s heart stuttered when she saw the shear panic on The Doctors face. She’d seen anger, sadness, joy, rage and a multitude of other emotions on his countenance before but this? Panic was a look she thought she would never see on him. Not for himself anyway. “Its okay Doctor, I can fly her, just tell me what to do. Alright?”

The Doctor didn’t reply. He was caught up in his own struggle to keep control. He felt so helpless and it was a feeling he definitely didn’t enjoy. He couldn’t see anything. Not even faint shadows were evident to his straining eyes. If he tried hard enough, concentrated hard enough, he’d at least see something, right? The Doctor started to tremble as reality sunk in. He couldn’t see. No shadows, no lights, no sprinklings of stardust to awakening senses. Surely his eyes were just stunned. Surely.

As Donna watched The Doctor, waited for a response from him, she realized she was on her own here. The TARDIS shook once again and The Doctor clutched her arm desperately. “I’m here Doctor” she reassured him, “but I’ve got to leave you on the chair over here, okay? I’ve got to get us out of here.” Donna was sure she could remember some of the things she had forced The Doctor to teach her about the TARDIS. About flying her and what the strange buttons and levers were for. She was brilliant. Right? The Doctor said so all the time…

She lowered The Doctor to the captain’s chair and tried to pull away. He clutched her arm desperately, unwilling to break contact with his only solid comfort. She pried him off her arm reluctantly, then rubbed the indentations his clawed hand had left. “No worries, Doctor,” Donna said with false cheeriness, “I’ll be back as soon as we get off this planet. We’ll head straight to the sickbay and you can awe me with your incredible knowledge about how you’ll have yourself seeing in no time.” It hurt her to have to leave him sitting there, his face for once completely open and unschooled. She almost hugged him to her but the TARDIS rocked again, more violently this time and she had to turn her back to him. She couldn’t help him properly if they were just going to blow up right then.

She hurried to the console and looked at it in confusion. Think you git, Donna thought to herself as she grabbed the rubber mallet on the floor. How did he set her again? Hit this, run around to the other side, then move this lever, press the purple button, run back and bang with mallet again here…and Donna stepped back expectantly and waited for the TARDIS to go. Nothing happened. Damn, what did I miss? Think, think…Donna glanced back at The Doctor vaguely hoping he’d step up to the plate and take over but seeing the terrified look on his face she looked away again, pained to see him so vulnerable and concentrated on getting this right. Ooohhhh, yes, that’s what she forgot. Hit this, run around to the other side, move this lever AND press the purple button simultaneously, then run back and bang with mallet again here.

This time the TARDIS lurched in response and Donna ran back around and hit another lever and they were off. She had no idea where but at least they were away from this place. Donna grinned to herself and gave herself a pat on the back. She really was brilliant.
