Hey, jj, didn't know you were here until reading your comment on grrm's blog - yes, this is the AliCat from RockNet, only when I landed on lj in 2004, there already *was* an alicat so I had to become "the first"....

Being a big fan of Dexter too, I agree that the whole Deb-loves-Dexter-as- mate was kinda nutty, though of course that therapist kind of helped her along the way there. I'm pretty sure she's going to be at least somewhat okay with her discovery of Dex's activities at the end of last season, at least to the point of not turning him in as a multi-faceted serial killer, at least not yet. Should be some good long discussions between the two coming up, yes?

Well, good thing I coined "counterfictual" in that thread last night. That's because I spent some of the weekend reading the fourth and sixth Dexter books. They and the show have diverged a LOT.

For instance, in the books, Rita's still alive, they have a daughter together rather than a son, Astor and Cody are being trained by Dexter on Harry's path and have each killed at least one person. Doaks is still alive, albeit lacking feet, hands or a tongue.

Deborah is blonde and buxom and -- getting back to the point -- is aware of Dexter's hobbies.

And no, they haven't really talked much about it. She became aware of it when Dex stopped Brian -- oh, and Brian's still alive and hanging out with Dex and Rita at times (this happened in the book I've missed so far) -- from killing her, and in these recent books she's sometimes alluded to it, but not much.

I wasn't that aware of it when I first posted the above. But the divergence of the books and the show is something I totally support. In Dexter In The Dark, the author revealed that ( ... )

I read Game of Thrones and perhaps one or two followups in 2000 or so. I liked the ambition of the presentation, but then pretty much forgot about them. And then in '04, I had to ditch over 95% of my books. I kept Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Tom Sharpe and a few random others.

But I'd heard so much raving about the series that I bought the DVD set when it came out. That's how I consume my HBO. I have complete sets of The Wire and Deadwood for instance.

And the show version has me hooked, right from the credits animations. And, of course Peter Dinklage. Didja know that on the commentary track on one episode, they have the Stark kids singing along with the opening theme? "Dum! Dum! dada dum, di di Dum! Dum! ..."I'm a real sucker for commentary tracks ( ... )
