my family is the same way. every time i go home i force my mom to clean out a bunch of things with me and get rid of stuff. she's always really resistant to it until oprah does another 'simplify your life' special and then she's all about it. clutter seriously makes my brain stop working.
Even, I, with all the crap I have, don't understand hoarders. Getting rid of stuff means buying stuff that is newer and cuter, which is fun. Also. I never wear/use things I don't like. I don't care who gave them to me. So I support throwing away dumb souvenirs.
You're lucky you didn't pick up those habits from your parents. My parents are the two logical extremes: Mort has a really huge house STUFFED with weird shit. And he's always buying more! There are literally persian rugs piled on top other persian rugs. Marianna tripped on them and hurt her ankle. But a part of Mort's problem might be due the the fact that he is too lazy/busy/aristocratic to actually look through his shit to get rid of stuff. My mother on the other hand never keeps/has anything. I think it is because she moves too much. She'll even get rid of stuff she likes and needs.
