Have you heard of a colonial custom involving hiding old shoes in the walls of houses? I read about it in a kid's book, but the author didn't say why people did that (or if she did, I forgot).
Ah! This is the author whose book I read. And she did explain why people hid the shoes but I just forgot because my brain is now like a sieve. Thanks for the link.

If I were a total dork I would point you towards Walter Scott's Letters on Demonolgy and Witchcraft, maybe page 175--but seriously, I'm not doing that. Not at all.
(I have no idea what is on page 175, but I do recommend the book because it is full of interesting anecdotal evidence.)
