Finally heard this (this being Lauren's "Candle In The Wind"), and I was touched: she went from soft and sensitive to a restrained wail as if it was all of a piece. Not quite as authoritatively passionate as Brooke White's "Let It Be," but the same sort of feeling.
By the way, since you didn't watch last year you missed Didi Benami, who was voted off way too early at 10, but before then gave one of the best performances, glitches and all, that I'd seen on Idol: "Play With Fire" - in some ways even more interesting than Brooke, since Didi's voice and demeanor was slighter but her underlying sense of herself was tougher. She also did a beautiful "Rhiannon," which was especially impressive given that you'd expect that song choice to be suicidal.
She did a nice version of "Terrified," too - brought more terror than Kat McPhee did. (Don't know what it is that goes wrong whenever Kat gets into the studio; lots of thought and taste in her phrasing but she rarely delivers the song.)
