Welcome back! Haven't heard from you in a while but will try to keep up with the AmIdol recaps.

Unfortunately, pop music had to take a backseat to some other stuff in my life over the last year or so but I'm ready to get back on the train!

At home I don't have a TV so have never watched the show straight through. I was at a TV this week and did watch it on Wednesday and... it was real hard to get through. I liked the boring easy listening ballad woman way more than the judges did. I hated the rock guy they loved who was more out of tune than any of the people they criticized for being out of tune. Lauren seems to be the only standout, though maybe I'm underestimating the country guy, who maybe is too snug in his style but was a pleasure to listen to. Pia was a bore; I don't get the praise. I liked the young woman who went all over the place with her jazz etc. stylings, though she's no great shakes. I thought Casey was bearable, though he certainly did oversing. Anyway, Lauren... her personality has nothing to do with modesty, but it's not challengingly arrogant either. Makes me uneasy, but my being uneasy may be an indication that she is an artist. Or it may have nothing to do with her artistry.

I too agree that this is a pretty weak group of contestants overall. From what I read, next week is Motown week which hopefully encourages some of the contestants like Scotty to break out of their comfort zone a little.

I haven't watched an actual episode of the show yet, so anything about personality or judges comments are a mystery to me.

This was Thia, and I'm sad she got eliminated so early. Not that she had a chance of staying long: her taste isn't America's taste, being too MOR ballady even for adult contemporary or smooth jazz - no thought crossing her mind of ever capitulating to the American demand for an "edge." She was born and raised here, but I wouldn't be surprised if she tries to market herself in Asia, where more consumers would share her aesthetic.

Curious if you've had time to glance at any of the k-pop convos on my lj. Wonder what you'd think of IU in particular. Her hero is Corinne Bailey Rae, though I think IU's voice is too weak to assert the commanding control that that sort of music requires (but listen to her try). She seems to have an aesthetic that both completely embraces MOR ballads and
that is thoroughly effective at taking it in shocking directions. "MIA" is what I call white goth, sort of easy listening in the verses but a sense of "Self-Control" (Branigan) ( ... )

I liked Thia too when she kept things quiet, but my problem with her was that she was often trying to be a big diva which she really wasn't. The quiet moments were always lovely though.

From beginning last year until about a month ago, I was pretty much off the grid on music, so I haven't seen any of these k-pop links, but I will follow along when I have a chance.

Most thoughtful judges comments were by Jennifer.
