Aphrodite and Goats

Goats probably aren't the first thing that pop into your head when someone mentions Aphrodite, but maybe they should be.

Oh, except for stuff following from τραγίζειν. Liddell and Scott don't mention that; it's straight from Pirenne.

This is one of the reasons in my mind at least that the idea of Aphrodite and February seemed to stick beyond the whole Valentine's thing. February was of course associated with the Lupercalia, goat sacrifices and rituals of purification and renewal, all of which under the surface of things are very Aphrodite.

Oh, and I'm a dummy, incidentally. I did follow up on Thiasos Aphrodite Pelagia earlier. And I got a response. I just (re-)found it. They have a website and a Yahoo! Group.

Duh.
