But are there really that many slugs on the island? It's not a terribly large island, after all.

A friend of mine built her own compost tumbler using an old beer keg. She seemed pretty pleased with it--but I also think that good old-fashioned methods have stuck around for so long for a reason.

That makes sense -- if I had a beer keg, or some sort of barrel, I probably would too. Maybe I'll build a compost box, or just fence it off from the dogs.

(And, I was surprised at how many slugs there were in crawling radius, too)

Will the dogs now get a bonus dinner of duck? Or is that not a concern?

I suspect the ducks can take em :)
But we're fencing them off carefully, just in case.
