Lunch, and the System of the World

If you came up to me and asked, my dear fellow, given two months, and given this budget for this size team, how do you build a web portal, a complex social networking site, say? And I could tell you. It would not be the One True Answer, but it would be solid, and following my plan you would have a decent portal at the end of that time span. I know ( Read more... )

allrecipes.com is great in a pinch because you can list the ingredients you have on hand and it will show recipes available. I also signed up for their daily recipes and weekly slow cooker recipes and have really beefed up my recipe box.

Slow cooker=nom nom nom with little effort. I use it a least 2-3 times a week and will be getting a big 8 quart one for xmas (currently using 4 quart in which a whole chicken will fit... and apparently its hilarious to watch me fit said chicken into the pot. Larger pot will be much nicer).

In my house, the cook decides what the cook wants to cook and if you don't like it... then I guess you go hungry ;)

Re condition three and fiat -- I completely agree. I was thinking along the same lines, myself. (Also, great idea about three smaller dishes)

Acha. I've spent enough time with third world people to pick up an ethic of 'don't waste food', which can override the first world ennui. If I look in the fridge and see something that needs using, I get all creative about how to use it.

I feel your pain. We are pretty disorganized when it comes to meal planning. Same deal, two adults, working full-time, both pretty good cooks. Some weeks are better than others. I occasionally discover untapped reserves of discipline within myself and say 'ok, here's what we are having tonight, then tomorrow, and this is what for lunch', but that's quite rare.

We have some things that are 'default' dishes for when we have really no clue and start wandering around the supermarket in a daze. Pasta usually works. Grilled cheese sandwiches with soup. When I make curry, my life becomes easier, because it lasts for a few days and makes a good lunch as well. Japanese stuff like unagi don (that might not work for everyone, but we have a Japanese grocery store nearby). Homemade mac and cheese.

For lunches, our default is PB&J (now that I discovered I didn't actually hate peanut butter, I just hated the sweetened varieties), or chicken salad or egg salad on bread.

I completely empathize. Nothing sends me into a tailspin faster than, "What's for supper?" when I don't have a meal plan in place. :/ Some things that help ( ... )
