Man, didn't they JUST release a new edition? A 3.5? Or something? Was that something else?
I've never played D&D, but my love for Order of the Stick is such that I've been pondering giving it a try. The variety of dice is such a mystery to me! I'm used to the standard 10-sided die all the WoD stuff uses.
Yeah, they put out a 3.5 edition a while ago, tweaks on the 3rd. I wanted to mention it, but '3.5rd edition' just didn't have the ring to it.
You should totally try it out! At its best, it is a LOT of fun. Of course, the trick is to finding a good and tolerant (and tolerable) group not too far from you. (No worries about the variety of dice, it's easy. You'll basically be rolling a 20-sided die for everything, and only occasionally whip out the other odd dice, for damage rolls).
It's online-involved in two senses. One, they'll have a website that will basically provide "DVD bonus features" kind of stuff -- game writer commentary, changes to rules, maybe new adventures or classes or whatever. Dragon Magazine type of stuff.
And two, they'll have an online gameroom on that site. So that people can run games online (it looks like they'll even provide mapping capability and virtual miniatures to move around, but I'm somewhat skeptical).
Neither one of those sound too bad (I was concerned about the online-involved aspect as well).
Oh, man, I hope the online gaming aspect is . . . passable. I've been separated from all my old gaming buddies, and there don't seem to be many where I am now.
Honestly, if you have time, even now the gaming chatrooms are pretty well equipped (they have dice rolling tools, wiki-like places for character sheets and campaign notes, etc).
Though of course the 4th edition is a neat and convenient date to wait for, and a good excuse to start playing again.
