I'm not actually a prepper, but you make some great points. The disaster no one prepares for is losing their jobs. Natural disasters can occur any time - see Santa Barbara floods.

Thanks! For (natural) disaster preparedness, FEMA sez a 72 hour kit should do the trick until relief arrives. Based on observed FEMA behaviors, you may want to go long on seven to 14 days of food, water & means to keep warm and dry.

Ah, people are just nuts. I am still waiting for someone to tell me how the US hasn't been great and a world leader all along.

I'm generally of the belief that if something horrendous happens here I'll be swept out to sea. Of course, this is only true in case of tsunami, not earthquake - which is infinitely more likely.

It became the fondest wish of my heart to be at ground zero with no escape option in the event of a nuclear strike because ick. Who wants to survive that? Then the movies Testament and that TV thing with the guy and later on The Road came out to illustrate in great detail why going fast, first thing is really desirable.

The little voice at the back of my head insists that with my luck, I will survive against all odds (cue appropriate disco & pop eaworms here,) and then what ( ... )

That thing on TV with the guy was The Day After with Jason Robards, by the way. My memory coughed it up about 35 seconds after posting, as it does.
