As I just wrote to Smara, I've been doing a lot of research, and I'm considering going with a company called Portable One (http://www.laptopsinc.com). Sounds like almost exactly the machine I want (plus it's unusually customizable), and their customer service is just unbelievable.

I had the same what-should-I-get nightmare a few years ago, so I thought I might chime in to let you know what I ended up with and loved to death - a mid-range (cos I wasn't rich!) Sony Vaio. I watched all my dvds on it and it did everything I needed and never caused me the tiniest worry. Everyone I know who's ever had one has loved them, and had no problems. I just hope the swine who stole it appreciated it as much as I did...

I've heard the Vaio is really nice; it gets good reviews, and I'm definitely looking into it. And how awful that yours got swiped - that just sucks! Swine, indeed!
