So I was away last week, at the beach in NC - no, wait, actually it was the week before last, but when I started drafting this post it was "last week" *g*. Ah, well, better late than never, or at least I hope so
( Read more... )
You know, you really should post the rant about Jane to Pros Lit. I'd so love to see their reaction to it. You said that so damned well. I've wanted to say something like that for years. :-)
Czardos and Rainbow Chasers are probably two of my all time favorite Pros stories. Along with Larton Chronicles and Hunted by Devils. :-) I still have to do my desert Island fics for you, don't I?
Desert Island fics, yes yes yes yes! And I can definitely see what you love about these fics.
Glad you appreciated my Jane rant - I'm a little reluctant to post it to Pros-lit, though I'm feeling a bit belligerent after having spent the day over there defending LJ, the archive, my motivations, etc. etc. Maybe I should just stir things up a little more.
Sometimes fandom can be very exhausting!
And thanks so much for Saturday - it was great; always love seeing you :-) Nancy and I spent a few hours discussing more archive design issues last night, and now all I have to do is a preliminary implementation (*all*, she says!). So it's moving along ...
You know, I was reading through that LJ think and I have to wonder what planet those people are from. I mean, can you get any more bellergent and set in their ways. Oh, 'I can't be arsed to do look for a decent story even though I'm dying to read one'. If you peel me a grape I might condescend to eat it.
Man, like, get a life or something.
I think they need to be shaken (not stirred) up. And that rant might just do it. I think it was very well done. :-)
I second that - go discuss Jane. Although, on the other hand - and as I'm *exhausted* by some of the prickly lot there myself - I'd understand if you didn't.
There's a weird, weird pack mentality on there. Or seems to be, because so many things are repeated over and over and usually by the same people (or mainly). So rather than *discussion*, you get scorn, contempt or mud slung at you if you don't fit into the mould, like the 'right' authors, and believe zines to be infinitely superor. Bitter? Me? Well, after being smacked by the admins for trying to *stop* meta and thrown into the same bag as somebody who hurls accusations... uh-huh. Mind, there *are* still plenty of people on there who discuss with a fairly open mind.
Must do a Doyle's bum thread on there, I think, because (contrary to rumours *g*) I never have so far. Must have been too busy forcing people over to LJ. That's what it is :)
Just a heads up: I have entangled myself in the LJ/List kerfuffle at Pros..Lit? today by writing a "can we just knock it off" post. So I may be persona non grata momentarily. I loved your post there, though.
Oh, you are very brave to dive into that fray. It's always so ... so prickly over there. Not a very welcoming environment at all, and I just don't understand why it has to be that way. *sigh* I'm afraid I just slightly lost my temper - yet another snarky "oh, so the archive is only going to be accessible to LJ users" comment. Makes me wonder why I bother.
Anyway, enough whinging - there are plenty of wonderful Pros fans out there, like YOU, and that is why I bother. I'm also still eagerly awaiting your ventures into Pros fic ... I have a feeling (and I know katyabaturinsky shares it) that they will be absolutely fabulous! Been a while since we spoke ... I'd love to know how you're feeling about Pros these days, and very glad to see you participating - it's good to have some representatives of the "new" ways on those lists.
Please keep writing your wonderful Pros posts. Screw the lists, if they don't like having to come to LJ. I hate the attitude of "we won't change" just as much as I hate the occasional "lists suck" post. There's room for all. However, as I said in my Proslit post, LJ has been far more welcoming to me.
"Prickly." Now there's a diplomatic way of describing that list.
Well, I'm very glad you bother, luv, and all those of us who actually welcome new blood in this fandom are most thankful for your efforts and for the presence of the_safehouse. (Especially as the list in question has just amply demonstrated why I warn all newbies to avoid it like the plague.)
Hooray! You've gotten me all psyched about Pros fic again! I've been meaning to watch some episodes, but I haven't been interested in reading Pros fic at all, lately. So, yay!
(As an aside: thinking about that got me pondering how to write a long relationship-driven fic, and the role of angst/misunderstandings/miscommunications in that kind of fic, but I decided to save those musings for another post!)
Wow. Well, if you figure it out -- or if you figure out how an author can keep fresh and motivated over the length of time it takes to write long stories -- let me know! I still haven't figured that one out yet...

Oh, yay, yay, yay! Wow, that's wonderful to hear!
And re: long relationship-driven fic - I have some musings about that; I'm going to pull them together into a post, I hope. I have no advice, though, about how authors can keep fresh and motivated - not being one, I have no idea. My musings are more along the lines of how to keep a long relationship-driven story fresh and interesting without falling into the contrived miscommunication trap. I don't have any answers, just musings :-D
Re: the icon - thanks - it is gorgeous, isn't it? *sigh* *drool*

Hello,
Just a quick note for now. (though I want to say you huge *Thank You!* about Jane. :))
If you haven't received an offer for missing two pages of Rainbow Chasers yet, I'm willing to send you the scan so please let me know. Although I'm not sure now if mine has them at the moment...
Re: Missing pagesjustacatSeptember 9 2004, 03:02:05 UTC
Kyo - Thank you *so* much for your offer. Actually, I'd love for you to send me the scan. I'll try emailing you to identify the precise pages ... it's driving me crazy, and since Doghouse Press is apparently still down, I can't even purchase my own copy!
Thanks for commenting - I'm glad you dropped by; I enjoy your comments on the list, and I thought your anime-style Pros art was fabulous :-)
I always find the "I've never looked at another bloke till Ray/Bodie" line in fic mildly irritating.I have read a lot of fics that are enjoyable and follow that line. But for some reason I find it hard to imagine Bodie as totally straight.
It's not just Pros lists that seem to have issues regarding lj's. There seems to be a lot of resistance to them in all fandoms, at least where I've been. I've found them a far more enjoyable experience than mailing lists that I've been on...at least latterly anyway.
But for some reason I find it hard to imagine Bodie as totally straight.
Heh. Could it be because he acts as queer as a three-pound note?? *g* *g* Not sure if this is a reference that means anything to you, but doll_revolution once said that that with his smirks and his hands-on-hips poses (and his pink shirts! *g*), all he needs is a Z-snap and a stool and he could be "Men on Film" (referring to the old Saturday Night Live sketch that involved two highly gay men reviewing movies). Not to mention the fact that he seems just about totally indifferent to women, except when it's a competition thing with Ray
