first full day in beijing

So, we did about half a day of work yesterday and a full day today. Were farther along than my boss wanted but not as far ahead as I'd like to be. If everything works out, I might be able to have everything built in four and a half days, instead of the two weeks that I was given. It might allow me home in time to grill dead things on the 4th of ( Read more... )

Did the pork feast include steamed pork dumplings? Gabe and I were at Ting's on Sunday and were speculating as to how long it would take you to find pork dumplings there that trumped anything the US can offer. Or are they one of the Americanized dishes?

Note the lower left hand corner. I did indeed find steamed pork dumplings and fast. I was at that table within 4 hours of landing. (within 30 minutes of leaving the hotel for lunch/the office)

So, yes, it took just under 4 hours for me to revel in the awesomeness of the steamed pork dumpling. They do indeed kick the crap out of anything that the US has to offer.

As far as Americanized food goes, the only thing I've had that was even remotely American was the KFC that we had for lunch on Wednesday - not because we were jonesing for anything from home, but because it is across the street and we are lazy. Other than that, everything I've had has been pretty traditional and otherwise authentic Chinese cuisine. Fortunately for me, neither my boss nor the guy running the office minds explaining things to me when we get menus that lack pictures or English subtitles.

Since I haven't had a chance to get out and see much of anything, the food has been the highlight of my trip.

indeed i am here for work. i'll be home on saturday. your friends should definitely go and see the forbidden city. it is a truly awesome spectacle. tienamen square is right by the south gate of the forbidden city, so they'll be able to see both in one shot.

the great wall is about half a day's round trip from beijing, so there's some planning that they'll have to do to get to that. if they want touristy crap to bring home, they have to go to Wangfujing Street. Total tourist trap, but it is brimming with random souveniers.
