on graffiti

I had a planning session this afternoon with a teenager and his mother. The mother commented on some of the graffiti in the city and pronounced it "beautiful art." She also said that she wouldn't mind seeing more graffiti because it would enhance the "urban feel" of Indianapolis ( Read more... )

I am not saying it isn't art. My point was that graffiti is vandalism. No matter how cool it looks, it's still destruction of property.

There are many cities who have created "graffiti" areas and then commissioned the graffiti artists to do murals and work in those areas. And in doing so, have been able to curb some of the problems with unwanted graffiti. In that case, it's art and it's not vandalism. It's vandalism only when it's someplace that it's not wanted or not allowed, you know?

There was a piece about this on NPR maybe six months ago, and it was intriguing.

Maybe they were talking more about the graffiti that was done along Meridian. It's defnitely graffiti, but was actually comissioned and done by quite s number of volunteers. Some of it is fairly stunning.

I agree -- put it on a canvas dear, instead of a building and it can be just as lovely :)
