The lab was running at its normal pace throughout the hallways of the expansive building despite the late hour. But then to the night shift the late hours were always the beginning of something, whereas to most the night held a certain intermission to life even in the constantly moving city of Las Vegas.

Gil sat at his desk in his office, the soft hum of his computer the only sound in contrast to the busywork of the rest of the building. His pen tapped idly against the stack of papers that lay in front of him. During the short refrain as evidence was logged and categorized from the motel crime scene, he was attempting to work through evaluation reports. While paperwork was something that he normally put off purposefully so that he could actually work cases instead, as of late he had enjoyed the quiet solitude of his office.

His life in the lab had changed for obvious reasons. A member of his team had left, and it had been personal. His team never mentioned it in front of him, but it was in their demeanor; knowing looks or a sudden silence or obvious change of topic when he walked into a room.

A light tap to the door to his office interrupted his thoughts. He looked up to see Catherine and Jim standing just outside. They walked in and Gil set down his pen. “I could thank you for the interruption.”

“Evaluation reports?” Catherine asked, eyeing the large stack of papers on his desk.

Gil removed his glasses around a slight nod. “Among copious amounts of other things that I’ve been putting off, yes. Where are we?”

“Talked to some of the girls who are friends to our latest victim. They only know her as ‘Star’. Apparently Star is a sweet girl who’d…” He lifted the small notebook that he took noted in to quote from his own writing. “…’never hurt nobody’.”

“Who she would hurt is not in question here. It’s who hurt her.” Gil answered idly.

“Yeah, well I found out who her employer is.” Eyebrows arched high over Jim’s brow in amusement.

Curiosity laced Gil’s features. “Her employer?”

“Uh… her pimp.” Catherine clarified, thoroughly enjoying the look of continued confusion and yet understanding on her supervisor’s face. “His name is Getit.” At this point she couldn’t hold back the laugh at the new expression from Gil.

Jim smirked lightly and nodded. “Not a lie. His name’s Getit. As in Get It, Get It Here. You know… get it?”

A slow nod from Gil as he absorbed that information. “And where is Getit now?” He paused, clearing his throat around that phrasing. “At this moment, I mean. So far he’s the only suspect we have.”

“Got a unit bringing him in as we speak.” Jim answered. “We’ll get to Getit as soon as he’s here.”

“Found him on the street mid business venture.” Jim explained, walking through the hallways with both Gil and Catherine at his sides.

“Business venture?” Gil asked, head tilting to one side curiously.

Jim nodded. “Selling crack cocaine… to a fifteen year old rich kid who we also brought in and is scared to death of his parents coming to pick him up. Had the nerve to ask for police protection. I’m telling you, kids are watching too many crime dramas these days. I kinda can’t wait to watch his parents pick him up once they know what he was doing on the wrong side of the tracks.”

“If it were Lindsey, she wouldn’t see daylight for months… possibly years.” Catherine shook her head.

Gil felt his jaw tighten, at the additional information. The ‘pimp’ had been selling drugs to kids and probably had been for a long while. There were very few things that could anger him enough to show that anger on the outside instead of holding it all in. “Can you book him just on the drug distribution alone? Keep him off the streets?”

“Yeah. Distribution to minors. But from the looks of him, he’s got the dough to make bail. I mean this guy’s got a drug ring and he taking in a hefty percentage of every trick these girls turn. He dresses the part too. Cocky son of a bitch.”

“He won’t be so cocky if we put him in jail for murder.” Catherine shrugged.

“If he’s the murderer.” Gil finished the general thought of the statement. “We don’t know that he killed ‘Star’ yet.”

Catherine conceded around a small nod. “So if he doesn’t confess, he could be back out on the streets again by the end of the day.”

“And really, how often do the suspects cough up the truth right away and confess to murder?” Jim put on a show of thinking over that question. “Oh… let’s see… One… two… never.”

“And this isn’t just a murder. This is our third victim. It’s a serial.” Gil answered, his voice a little more tight than normal. “What we know for fact is that he’s selling drugs and selling sex for money.”

“That won’t keep him behind bars yet.” Catherine stated.

“It will if we convince the parents of the boy to press charges. But that would take him standing up in front of him at trial. This guys intimidating and that kid’s already scared out of his mind.” Jim shook his head, pausing in front of the door to the interrogation room. “Just don’t see it happening.”

Gil drew a deep breath in attempt to suppress the anger that welled up inside of him. “If we can get this guy for anything, we need to do it. 33,000 people died last year from overdose, over 6,000 of which were kids.”

Jim nodded. “So we’re taking the low road on this one? I’m gonna say I’m good with that.” He looked to Catherine. “You good?”

“We’re still going by the book.” Gil stated if only for the fact that he felt that it needed to be said.

“Of course we are.” Catherine shrugged around a small nod. “But if we can book him for something that will keep him behind bars for longer than making bail, we should.”

“Right.” Jim smirked, opening the door. “The low road.”
