Rock My World - Prologue

“You were great, oppa!” The girl hugged her co-star tightly.

“We’ll miss you, Onew.” A boy was patting the singer’s back.

“Jonghyun has big shoes to fill,” another voice chimed in.

The crowd of actors, singers and dancers surrounded their lead for the last time behind the closed curtains, congratulating him on his last performance with the crew. Onew had been the lead singer in the Korean production of “Rock of Ages” for almost two years and he had resigned to move on to bigger and better things - he had just been signed by none other than SM Entertainment.

“Good luck hyung!” another back-up dancer said.

“Yeah, if SM gives you any trouble you can always sue them.”

“Jonghyun!”

“What? It’s the truth,” the half-blond boy grinned in response. He hated to admit it, but he was going to miss Onew.

The truth was that their lead’s departure left Jonghyun very anxious: he had been Onew’s understudy as well as a supporting actor ever since he was hired by the show six months ago and was now supposed to take on the elder’s part. Jonghyun knew the lines and the lyrics inside and out, backwards and forwards, but he still couldn’t help the feeling of dread creeping through him: Onew had been more than amazing and Jonghyun wasn’t sure if he could match that. He was more than thankful for the honourable opportunity, but at the same time he didn’t want to disappoint. He wondered how the elder had managed all the pressure when he first started.

After countless embraces, handshakes and pats on the back, Onew finally retreated to the dressing room he shared with Jonghyun, who was already shirtless in front of the large mirror wiping his makeup off. The elder took off his leather jacket and hung it in the small closet with a sense of nostalgia - all those goodbyes had him feeling a little emotional - but he didn’t dwell on it. It was time to move on.

He started to unsnap and untie the countless studded bracelets on his wrists in a precise order before taking off his necklace; army-style boots, sweat-drenched shirt and socks following. This had been his nightly routine for the past two years and although a part of him would miss it, he was glad it would become Jonghyun’s because the younger boy was kind-hearted - even though he did get cocky sometimes - and undeniably talented. The production really couldn’t have picked a better person, Onew thought.

“Onew?” Jonghyun’s soft voice asked.

“Hmm?” the elder hummed absent-mindedly in response, still busy with his elaborate costume.

“Do you think I’ll do fine?”

Onew and Jonghyun had become as close as co-workers could get in six months’ time and didn’t hesitate to refer to each other as friends. That said, never once had the elder heard such hesitation and doubt in the other’s tone - it just wasn’t like Jonghyun. He turned himself sideways on the swivelling chair to face the blond at once.

“Of course, Jjong,” Onew spoke but had a feeling it wouldn’t be enough to convince the big-eyed puppy (in rockstar attire) look-a-like in front of him. “Why are you doubting it? You’ve played the part before; besides, everyone loves you.”

“It feels different this time,” Jonghyun admitted, dark eyes lowering to the table crowded with cosmetics in front of him. “It’s more pressure than I thought it’d be. The company’s changing a few scenes, too.”

Onew placed a comforting hand on Jonghyun’s shoulder, truly believing that the boy had no reason to worry. He had always thought that Jonghyun had been born to sing and that, had his awing voice not been enough, his hard-working and dedicated persona would have inevitably pushed him to succeed anyway.

“Jjong,” he spoke, “you’ve got one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. I know it’s a lot of pressure, but don’t forget you’ve got people behind you, too.”

Jonghyun gave his friend a shy smile.

“Thanks.”

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go get rid of all this glitter,” Onew said, pointing to his face, making Jonghyun laugh a little.

The elder then went to shower in the small bathroom adjacent to their room while Jonghyun just changed into the sweats he had packed, deciding he would shower at home, in his apartment. Three knocks were heard on the door and Jonghyun opened it to let Jino - who was dragging a rather heavy-looking duffel bag behind him - in.

“Do you mind if I set up my stuff?” the younger boy asked.

“Oh right,” Jonghyun mumbled. He had almost forgotten Jino would be filling in his role from now on and therefore sharing rooms with him. “No,” he answered.

Jonghyun wasn’t very close to the boy, for no particular reason, really. They simply hadn’t gotten to talk to each other much, despite Jino being Jonghyun’s understudy. They respected each other, but that was pretty much it. The thought of having to share a dressing room with him made Jonghyun slightly uncomfortable - it would certainly be awkward. They were lacking the instant connection Jonghyun and Onew had had. Jino seemed more... serious, not that Onew hadn’t taken his job seriously, it was just that Jino had this more solemn quality to him whereas Onew was more friendly, even goofy what with his habit of tripping over his own feet.

Jino was done unpacking when Onew stepped out of the bathroom in fresh and dry clothes.

“Take care of Jonghyun for me, Jino,” the elder spoke with a hint of playfulness. “Don’t be afraid to boss him around if he gets messy in here and doesn’t pick up after himself.”

“Hyuuung,” Jonghyun whined, but his lips were stretched into a smile. He watched with a bit of a gloomy feeling pressing down on his chest as Onew picked up his bag that had been waiting by the door. This was goodbye for real.

“I have to go,” the beloved lead announced. “My family’s waiting outside.”

Jonghyun nodded and walked up to his elder, embracing him in a tight hug. Onew rubbed his back gently and was surprised when he had to blink away a few tears.

“You’ll come back, right? Come visit us?”

“Of course.”

They smiled at each other and Onew finally turned around with a last wave of his hand. Sighing, Jonghyun grabbed for his backpack and bid a polite farewell to Jino before trudging out of the room and out of the theatre. A few fans were waiting by the artists’ entrance and he stopped dutifully to chat for a bit, sign autographs and take pictures, but he quickly excused himself when a wave of tiredness hit him. He hopped on a bus that would take him home and slumped down on his seat, thinking about that cool shower and those warm covers that awaited him in his apartment.
