Sep 13, 2015 13:07

Pairing: idol!Key / student!Jonghyun
Rating: PG-13-NC-17
Genre: General, Romance
Word count: 11919
Summary: Jonghyun’s job is rather unusual; dog sitting for an idol isn’t something most students pick up on the side. Only, what he expected to be a stroll in the park with two lovable dogs turns out to be much more than he bargained for.

A/N: This chapter was so long I had to split it in two. Why, lj. It was inspired by a few things, including Key's My Little Television and his appearance on Heart-a-tag (this part especially).
Credit for the banner goes to Emma as usual! You're a star, darling <3 And thank you to Nathalia my sunshine for your support and encouragement <333
I really hope you like this chapter, I couldn't wait to share it ^^

Chapter 1 🐾 Chapter 2 🐾 Chapter 3 🐾 Chapter 4 🐾 Chapter 5

Jonghyun walks into Kibum’s apartment expecting many things: namely a kiss or two, maybe even a jab for being a bit late. He certainly isn’t expecting to see Nicole open the door, grinning at him in a sudden, terrible moment of déjà vu.

Just like the last time, she takes one look at him before turning to shout over her shoulder. “Jonghyun is here!”

Jonghyun stays frozen in the doorway; it takes Garçons jumping and clawing at his legs while Comme Des twirls around his shoes to snap him out of it. He slips off his shoes absent-mindedly while Nicole watches him, and Jonghyun feels very exposed all of a sudden.

Kibum’s head peeks down the hallway as he waves around a shopping bag. “We went shopping!” he tells Jonghyun excitedly. “Give me a few minutes to change and I’ll be right out.”

Jonghyun nods stiffly before bending down to pet the dogs, hyper-aware of Nicole’s eyes on him.

“I’m glad you two finally got together,” she blurts out.

Jonghyun is so shocked by her words that he forgets all about any lingering awkwardness and looks up to stare at her, wide-eyed.

“What?” she says in a teasing tone. “Like you didn’t know?”

“Didn’t know what?”

She rolls her eyes, but Jonghyun is too stunned to be offended by the gesture. “Men,” she mutters to herself, shaking her head. “He’s been pretty much talking about you nonstop since the moment he met you. It got kind of annoying, really.”

When Jonghyun doesn’t say anything in return, too busy gaping at her, she adds, “And you practically spent that entire party sneaking glances at each other, don’t think I didn’t notice.”

“I… I wasn’t…”

She raises an eyebrow when he comes up short, as if to make her point.

“Of course,” she continues breezily, “I’m the one who had to deal with his drunk, sorry ass that night when he thought Hyorin was hitting on you and that you were straight as an arrow.”

Jonghyun splutters at that-he thought what?

“Now, I’ve tried to tell him Hyorin isn’t so straight herself but he never listens to me. Instead he went running to Dongwoon and, boy, does that never end well. So yes,” she speaks with finality, ending her spiel while looking Jonghyun dead in the eyes, “I’m glad you two finally got together.”

Jonghyun is, quite simply, at a loss for words. And yet, all he can think of is: “He talked about me?”

Nicole smirks at him, chuckling. “Talked, bragged, whined about,” she lists, “you name it.”

When Jonghyun doesn’t say anything in return, she nudges his shoulder amicably. “Don’t look so shocked!”

Kibum chooses that moment to come out of his bedroom, joining them in the hallway. He takes in Jonghyun’s stricken expression with round eyes, turning to Nicole for an explanation.

“What did you do to him?”

“Nothing!”

When Kibum narrows his eyes at her, she shrugs and turns away, grabbing her bag. “Fine, I’m leaving, you two have fun.” She stops next to Jonghyun on her way out, leaning in close to speak to him. “I’m happy for you, you’ll be good for him.” She sounds serious, and Jonghyun feels both shy and proud from the unexpected praise.

“Thank you.” He says the words quietly and she smiles at him-a genuine smile, with none of the teasing edge it held before.

She pats him on the shoulder warmly and shouts out a goodbye to Kibum before leaving.

“What did she say to you?” Kibum asks him at once.

“That you’ve been talking about me?” Jonghyun says with a questioning lilt to his words. It isn’t that he doesn’t believe Nicole, but he kind of wants to hear it from Kibum himself.

Kibum raises his hands to his cheeks, flustered and embarrassed. “I told her to keep quiet,” he mumbles, and Jonghyun can’t bear to stand by and watch anymore. He walks up to Kibum and places a hand on his upper arm, drawing him closer.

“Hey,” he says quietly, shaking Kibum a little, “I’m… flattered. Surprised, but flattered.”

“As you should be,” Kibum states, his shyness slowly ebbing away in favour of cockiness. As much as Jonghyun finds a flustered Kibum endearing, this cocky side of him amuses him.

“I had no clue you liked me since then. Or at all, really.”

Kibum’s careful composure seems to melt away again, and when he speaks his words are slow, weighted. “You were so cute and polite and quiet when I met you. It’s like you live in your head sometimes, but you were also blunt. So honest. I like that. I just had this urge to be around you.”

Jonghyun leans in at once, tilting his head up slightly to catch Kibum’s lips with his own. Kibum gasps into the kiss and Jonghyun smiles at the sound, pursing his lips against Kibum’s plump ones. He draws back slowly to face a dazed Kibum.

“Shall we go?”

Kibum takes a moment to gather himself before nodding. “Right, yes.”

Jonghyun chuckles, leading Kibum out after having bid goodbye to the pups who whine at the door once they realize they aren’t going for a walk. Still, he manages to forget about their pitiful whines when Kibum slips his hand into his while they wait for the elevator. It’s a simple gesture, but it makes him inexplicably giddy.

Kibum drives them to a small restaurant, tucked in a corner on the top floor of a rather upscale complex. It’s secluded enough that Jonghyun doesn’t worry too much about Kibum getting recognized. He isn’t dressed too outlandishly, simply wearing a loose shirt tucked into jeans that cut off at the ankle, showing off colourful socks. His hair isn’t styled, either, simply falling flat across his forehead. His light, golden brown contact lenses are a bit of a giveaway, but they aren’t too noticeable.

The menu is a bit on the expensive side of things, but if that means he and Kibum will get to dine in private, then Jonghyun can’t complain. He realizes at once that Kibum is really treating this like a right and proper date, which Jonghyun wasn’t really expecting. He would have been fine-maybe even more comfortable-with something a little more casual but Kibum apparently had something else in mind.

Things are slightly awkward at first, but Jonghyun soon realizes that it’s because both Kibum and he are trying to act differently, trying to act up to their date. It takes them a while but eventually they settle into their meal and fall into their usual, easy banter. Kibum seems to be having a good time as well considering the number of times Jonghyun has made him laugh over the past hour or so, and Jonghyun is amused to find that Kibum laughs just as loudly whether they’re alone on his couch or in the middle of an expensive restaurant, on a so-called date. Actually, it doesn’t seem like much has changed at all, at least until they climb back into Kibum’s car and Kibum suddenly leans over the stick shift to peck him on the lips. Kissing Kibum-the fact that he apparently gets to kiss those lips at all-is still a novelty to him, not something he’s willing to let himself take for granted. He chases Kibum’s lips when he pulls away, earning a warm chuckle.

“I have to drive,” Kibum reminds him, placing a finger to Jonghyun’s pouting mouth.

He offers to drive Jonghyun back to his dorm, but Jonghyun refuses; he isn’t quite ready to have the night end yet. They make it back to Kibum’s apartment, where the pups give them a warm welcome. The dogs become even more excited when they decide take them out for a walk. Not even the small sweaters Kibum puts them in can dampen their mood.

The streets are far from empty considering it isn’t all that late, but no one pays mind to them. If anything, people tend to stare at the two poodles in matching sweaters leading their way rather than at them. Jonghyun loves the nighttime-he loves the darkness, the quiet buzzing of people as they pass by, rushing back home after a long day. It’s comforting, in a way, and there’s something intimate but comfortable about sharing the moment with Kibum as they walk side by side.

They settle on a bench near Kibum’s apartment on the way back, after having stopped by a bubble tea shop at Kibum’s insistence. Jonghyun had agreed but only under the condition that he pay this time, considering how Kibum had kindly paid for his meal earlier. He had done it sneakily, too; Jonghyun had never even seen the bill.

It’s the perfect ending to the night, and the hopeless romantic in Jonghyun almost swoons when Kibum presses close, tilting his head for a sweet kiss. They stay on that bench for a long time, all four of them huddled together for warmth as the cool spring breeze slowly seeps through their clothes.

When they eventually part ways later that night, Jonghyun waits until Kibum is out of sight to take out his phone.

I really enjoyed tonight, he types in quickly, before his courage can leave him. He really wants Kibum to know that he’s serious about this and how much it means to him. I didn’t peg you for the romantic type, it was a pleasant surprise.

The answer comes seconds later and has Jonghyun smiling down at his phone for the rest of the way home.

Well I pegged you for the romantic type, seems like I was right :-) get some sleep, Jjong.

Their second date, if it can even be called that, isn’t so fancy. It’s a last-minute kind of thing: Kibum had texted him to ask if they could meet up for dinner before his rehearsal later that evening. Only, Jonghyun is already seated at the back of Jinki’s parents’ restaurant when he receives the text, about to indulge in a free meal because Jinki’s parents are nice like that. It’s good to know at least he and Jinki will never go starving. His mother sometimes even sends them leftovers from the restaurant; between that and his now unlimited access Kibum’s full fridge, courtesy of Mrs. Lee, Jonghyun knows to count his blessings. And that’s without mentioning the amazing cook that Kibum himself is.

Jonghyun warns Kibum that his roommate might show up at any time, but that doesn’t deter him. If anything, Kibum seems to want to meet him and somehow wheedles out the restaurant’s address from Jonghyun. There’s always that lingering worry that Kibum will get recognized and that it might cause a scene, but Kibum brushes him off on the phone.

Jonghyun still feels inexplicably nervous when he sees Kibum walk into the restaurant some time later. It’s one thing to be out with him at night, walking his dogs, but it’s another to be out with him in broad daylight, when he’s in full makeup and flashy clothing, with his hair done-up professionally. Kibum seems unbothered by it even though a few customers in the restaurant do cast him curious looks. He simply ignores them and takes a seat in front of Jonghyun.

“Are you sure this is okay?” he asks, not for the first time.

Kibum waves him off as he picks up a menu, quickly scanning it. “It’s fine. I don’t usually get approached in restaurants, anyway.”

Jonghyun isn’t convinced, but he chooses to trust Kibum. Still, it isn’t the only matter on his mind. “Aren’t you worried that if you do get recognized, people will… talk?”

Kibum looks up from the menu to frown at him. “Talk about what?”

“About how you’re out with, well, me.”

Kibum looks so utterly and adorably confused for a moment that Jonghyun forgets all about his worries and bites back a smile at the sight. “I don’t understand,” Kibum mutters.

“I’m not famous,” Jonghyun says, point-blank. “Aren’t you afraid people might talk if you’re seen with another man?”

“I’m pretty sure us dating is the last thing they would think of,” Kibum responds, just as blandly. “I go out with male friends all the time, Jonghyun. As long as we keep the PDA on the down low, there’s no need to worry.” Kibum pauses for a second before scoffing loudly. “Even then they probably wouldn’t think much of it. People would just assume I was drunk or something,” he speaks with a bitter edge to his voice, and Jonghyun understands the resentment behind it all too well. Dating the same gender in public isn’t easy on anybody, idol or not, in his experience.

Jonghyun’s gloomy musings are brought to an end when Kibum suddenly exclaims, “Gosh, everything looks delicious. You never told me Jinki’s parents owned a grill.”

“One of the best,” Jonghyun answers, lifting up his chopsticks in a small salute.

“Can I get free meals, too?” he asks shamelessly. “Since I’m dating their son’s roommate and all?”

Regardless of how much money Kibum makes, Jonghyun had come to realize that he was still careful about how he spent it (unless it came to designer clothing, of course).

“Nice try,” Jonghyun humours him. Kibum gives him an exaggerated pout, and Jonghyun bats his hand away when he tries to steal a piece of meat from the grill between them.

Jinki’s mother eventually comes by to take his order; she doesn’t stay to chat for long considering how busy the restaurant is at this hour, but she does enquire about Kibum. She brightens up when he tells her he’s an idol, and to Jonghyun’s mortification she even hums along his latest song once she recognizes him and makes a big fuss out of having an idol in her restaurant. Kibum takes it all in stride; he even graciously signs the napkin she hands him as Jonghyun watches on, shifting in his seat out of embarrassment.

“Sorry about that,” Jonghyun apologizes on her behalf once she retreats to the kitchen, but Kibum shushes him.

“I don’t mind,” he assures him, seeming unfazed by it all. Jonghyun wonders how he does it. “She seems very nice. Besides, it looks like I will get a free meal after all,” he adds, tongue-in-cheek.

Just as Kibum had predicted, Jinki’s mother returns from the kitchen shortly after, laying out their most expensive array of pork and beef cuts before him and telling Kibum to enjoy it on the house. Kibum protests at first, but she insists until he lets it go.

“I haven’t eaten beef in such a long time,” Kibum confesses, staring in awe at the elaborate platter in front of him.

“Because of your diet?”

Kibum nods, and Jonghyun is glad to see him dig in moments later, barely waiting for his pieces to cool and eating them practically straight off the grill.

“This is so good,” he slurs through a mouthful. He wriggles in his seat out of happiness and Jonghyun sort of wants to kiss him. “I have to tell Minho about this place.”

“Minho?”

“He loves these kinds of restaurants,” Kibum explains.

Jonghyun nods emphatically. “I’ll make sure to warn Jinki’s mom or else she might have a heart attack when she sees him walk through the door.”

Kibum laughs loudly at that, attracting the attention of quite a few people in the restaurant. It makes Jonghyun crack up, too, because Kibum’s uninhibited laughter is entertainment in itself.

Once he has caught his breath, Kibum goes back to shoving food into his mouth at an alarming pace while Jonghyun calmly finishes his dish. Kibum shares a few pieces from his platter with him, urging him to taste them even though Jonghyun has been here many times before. Jonghyun has a soft spot for seeing Kibum get excited over food and he hopes this isn’t the last time he drops by for a visit.

Distracted as he is, Jonghyun almost jumps out of his seat when Jinki suddenly appears to his side. Jinki’s gaze jumps between him and Kibum perplexedly before finally coming to a stop on Kibum. He nods his head into a slight bow and utters a tentative, “Hello?”

Kibum, who has stopped chewing to stare back at him, round-cheeked, rushes to swallow his bite and returns the greeting just as awkwardly. Jinki merely keeps staring at him and, for a moment, Kibum doesn’t seem to know what to do.

“It’s nice to finally meet you,” Jinki finally utters, speaking formally.

“Likewise,” Kibum returns a bit stiffly.

They both go quiet again, watching each other; it’s like a train wreck that Jonghyun can’t stop watching, either.

“So,” Jinki speaks up, fidgeting by their table. Jonghyun sends a silent prayer to whoever is listening for him to not be awkward for once and to not make a terrible joke on the first meeting. “I hear you have cute dogs.”

Jonghyun cringes a little at his delivery but still breathes a sigh of relief; of all the things Jinki could and probably would have said, this is actually not bad at all.

“Hopefully that’s not all you’ve been hearing.”

Jonghyun almost spits out the meat he’d been chewing at Kibum’s answer. Jinki also looks like he shares the sentiment, meanwhile Kibum looks unaffected. A small smirk stretches Kibum’s lips as he takes in their expressions and he seems immensely pleased with himself for it.

“I’ve heard… other things,” Jinki eventually answers, and Jonghyun wishes he would stop there. He tries to kick Jinki under the table, but he’s standing just out of reach. Jonghyun can only watch in horror when Jinki opens his mouth to speak again. “Although I don’t always know what to believe because he tends to get a bit whiny whenever he’s crushing on someone.”

“Hey!”

“Is that so?” Kibum interrupts-his smirk has dropped and he seems rather curious all of a sudden.

“Don’t encourage him!”

Jinki nods, ignoring Jonghyun’s pleas. “He’s not very good at hiding it, either.”

Kibum claps his hands together as he lets out a loud, barking laugh, and Jonghyun wishes Jinki would shut up forever.

“Alright, that’s enough,” Jonghyun orders.

“You had a crush on me,” Kibum singsongs, ignoring his request completely. Jonghyun resorts to pouting, and thankfully that gets his attention. “Oh come on, don’t be like that,” Kibum cajoles him, “I had a crush on you too, you know. I’ve told you that already.”

Jonghyun’s eyebrows shoot up and he forgets all about Jinki, who is still standing beside them awkwardly. He recalls their conversation with stunning clarity, but having Kibum put it so straightforwardly is still a surprise to him.

“I know, but you just… you just said you thought I was cute,” Jonghyun recounts. Kibum levels him with a serious gaze, but he’s smiling, too.

“You can be really dense sometimes.”

“Very true,” Jinki chimes in, unwarranted. Jonghyun hangs his head with a sigh, only to feel Kibum’s fingers beneath his chin, lifting it up again.

“Hey.” The smile Kibum sends him is so bright and candid that it blinds Jonghyun for a second. Before Jonghyun can even recover, Kibum leans in quickly, pressing the briefest, slightest peck to his lips. “I have to run, finish my food okay? You too, Jinki-ssi.”

“Just Jinki is fine,” he corrects him.

Kibum nods and shoulders his bag-a flashy leather number that probably cost more than Jonghyun could imagine, but Kibum makes it work. “It was nice meeting you, Jinki. Tell your parents they run a lovely restaurant.”

Kibum gives them a small wave as he leaves, intercepting Jinki’s mother on his way out. He leans down to speak to her and Jonghyun almost misses the way he subtly places a wad of cash into her hand. It’s probably more than enough to cover his copious meal and Jinki’s mother seems taken aback for a moment. She accepts his offer in the end and sees him out with a bow, which Kibum returns at length.

“He seems nice,” Jinki suddenly says, taking the seat Kibum just vacated. Jonghyun shrugs in an attempt to brush it off, acting casual even though he values Jinki’s opinion. “Like a handful, but nice. I’ll admit I didn’t think he’d be able to give you the kind of relationship you want, but here’s hoping I was wrong.”

Jonghyun hums absent-mindedly, still reeling from the kiss Kibum had surprised him with. Nobody in the restaurant seemed to be paying attention to them, but Jonghyun still didn’t think Kibum would risk doing such a thing.

“You two go well together,” Jinki speaks softly. The confession catches Jonghyun off guard and when he looks at Jinki wide-eyed, his roommate merely smiles at him.

“Thanks, Jinki.”

Jinki’s smile then takes on a teasing edge as he adds, “You know, I should have known you’d be the type to end up dating your boss. And an idol, at that.”

Jonghyun groans loudly. “Shut up,” he mumbles weakly.

They manage to clear off the remaining food together and Jonghyun helps Jinki clean up their table. He helps stack empty dishes in Jinki’s arms, hoping that his roommate won’t stumble and fall on his way to the kitchen. Jonghyun is just about to head out when he remembers something.

“Oh, Jinki,” Jonghyun starts casually, “can you warn your mom that Choi Minho might stop by soon?”

Jinki stops dead in his tracks to look at Jonghyun wide-eyed. “Ch-Choi Minho? The actor?”

Jonghyun simply nods and grins, tongue-in-cheek. “He’s friends with Kibum.”

Jinki is still standing frozen in shock when Jonghyun finally leaves, sniggering to himself.

***

Jonghyun is in the middle of typing up a lesson plan as an assignment for one of his classes when his phone rings on his desk. Jinki is fast asleep in his bed, considering the late hour, so Jonghyun jumps on his phone to answer the call and silence it.

“Hello?” Jonghyun answers hastily, lowering his voice.

“Jonghyun?” Kibum’s voice asks. “Oh good, I was afraid you’d be asleep already.” He sounds strangely agitated, so Jonghyun steps out into the hallway.

“What is it?”

“I’m sorry to call so late but I’d appreciate your help with something.”

Jonghyun frowns, wondering what could have him sounding so unsure. “Sure?”

“Um,” Kibum starts, and Jonghyun can suddenly hear the dogs’ muffled barking in the background, “well, I was hammering studs to make a jacket and the dogs kind of, uh, freaked out.”

“Why were you hammering studs at...” Jonghyun trails off, pulling his phone away from his ear to glance at the time, “one in the morning?”

Kibum is quiet for a second before sharing in a sheepish tone, “The neighbour said the same thing.”

Jonghyun can’t help but chuckle at the thought, shaking his head.

“I just felt like it, okay? I don’t wear that jacket anymore and I thought-” he cuts off abruptly, interrupted by loud barking. “The point is the kids are restless and they won’t calm down.”

“Just distract them, get their toys,” Jonghyun suggests.

“I’ve already tried that.”

Jonghyun sighs. On one hand, he knows from experience that it should only take him about fifteen minutes to get to Kibum’s place if he takes a taxi. On the other hand, it’s one in the morning.

“Do you want me to come over?” He doesn’t think he’ll be of much help, not if Kibum can’t seem to calm them down himself, but he offers anyway.

“If you don’t mind?” Kibum gives a sigh of his own. “They listen to you better than me, so.”

“In my dreams,” Jonghyun jokes. “I’ll be there in twenty.”

“Hurry before the neighbour comes back and pops a vessel.”

Jonghyun shakes his head again, ending the call. He tiptoes back into his dorm room to grab his backpack before heading out. He has a moment of hesitation by the door as he looks down at his attire, wondering whether he should change into something a little less… sloppy. He decides against it in the end, simply throwing on a jacket over his clothes-Kibum will have to see him in sweats sooner or later, after all, and Jonghyun doesn’t have the energy to put together a proper outfit.

Jonghyun makes it to the apartment complex in record time and everything is suspiciously quiet once he reaches the top floor. He doesn’t bother knocking, simply keying in his passcode. He had expected many things upon entering, but the sight of Comme Des and Garçons leisurely trotting up to him wasn’t one of them. They sniff at his hands when he bends down to pet them, tails wagging lazily, and give him a few licks before retreating to the living room to nestle up on their cushion.

Kibum then cocks his head down the hallway to peer at Jonghyun, looking a little guilty.

“You call this restless?” Jonghyun teases, pointing at the two sleepy dogs.

Kibum looks even more flustered for a moment, tilting his head down almost shyly.

“I swear they were a mess before,” he tries to convince Jonghyun, “they’ve calmed down since I called.”

“Uh-hun,” Jonghyun hums dubiously, which seems to aggravate Kibum even more.

He walks up to Kibum slowly, watching him fidget with the hem of his shirt. Jonghyun is pleased to notice that Kibum is also dressed down, in loose shorts and a big sweater. His face is entirely free of makeup; he even has two spots of cream on his cheek, and Jonghyun didn’t think anybody could make that look as endearing as he does.

He stops in front of Kibum, crowding him until he eventually looks up at Jonghyun.

“You know,” Jonghyun speaks casually, laying a hand on Kibum’s hip and loving the way Kibum’s eyes widen slightly at his touch and at the sudden proximity, “if you want me to come over, you can just say so.”

That does the trick; Kibum shoves at him childishly. “Shut up,” he whines meekly, like he doesn’t really mean it. Jonghyun gives a throaty chuckle and Kibum shoots him a small, but definitely real, smile.

Kibum steps in closer again, reaching out for one of Jonghyun’s hands and toying with his fingers.

“So, where’s the infamous jacket?” Jonghyun asks. He’s quite curious after all of this. “Did your neighbour come by again?”

Kibum pulls him towards the kitchen table as he speaks. “He didn’t. Gosh that was so embarrassing. Here it is.” He picks up the sleeveless jean jacket that had been draped over a chair, straightening it out. There are only a few studs on one of the shoulders, and Jonghyun figures Kibum only got that far before the dogs started acting up.

“How are you going to finish it, then?”

“I don’t know,” Kibum says dejectedly. “I’ll have to figure something out.”

“Do you make your own clothes often?” Jonghyun asks. He should have known by now that Kibum is full of surprises, yet somehow Jonghyun is still caught off guard whenever he admits to doing things himself.

Kibum nods; he gets an excited gleam to his eyes. “I can show you.”

He grabs Jonghyun’s hand again, leading him to his closet this time. He pulls out a few pairs of jeans, showing off how he had ripped them, as well as a few shirts he’d cut. He looks so lively as he chatters away, and his enthusiasm is hard to ignore. Jonghyun finds himself smiling back at him and Kibum’s one-sided lecture comes to a halt when he finally notices.

“Why do you keep smiling like that?”

“No reason,” Jonghyun dismisses with a shrug, “it’s just cute, how excited you get.”

Kibum answers him with a bright smile that shows off one of his dimples, the kind that makes Jonghyun’s stomach want to twist into knots. “I don’t mean to keep you, though,” Kibum then speaks softly. “I know you have school tomorrow morning.”

“It’s okay, I wasn’t going to get much sleep anyway,” Jonghyun assures him.

“I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.”

“I was working on an assignment,” Jonghyun confesses. “But it’s fine, I can finish it tomorrow.”

“Are you sure?” Kibum looks quite concerned, and Jonghyun appreciates his thoughtfulness.

“Positive,” Jonghyun reassures him.

“I’m sorry you came all the way for nothing,” Kibum apologizes, brow furrowing. His words are a bit slow when he speaks, like his tiredness is finally catching up to him. He even drags his feet a little when he goes back to hang up his clothes.

“Not for nothing.” Jonghyun feels strangely sentimental all of a sudden; he feels like he got to know Kibum a little better that night, like Kibum is letting him in more and more and it makes his chest swell with fondness and pride. “I got to see you.”

Kibum stops in his tracks, turning to face him. Jonghyun has a hard time reading his expression, which is why he doesn’t expect it when Kibum walks up to him, resting his arms on his shoulders. He leans in slowly but surely, sealing Jonghyun’s lips into a soft kiss. Jonghyun holds his breath, eyes falling shut as he returns it.

When Kibum draws back, Jonghyun is surprised to find his hands on either side of Kibum’s waist as he doesn’t recall placing them there.

“Are you sure it’s okay?” Kibum asks him in a whisper.

Jonghyun nods and leans in to reconnect their lips. Kibum makes a small noise at the back of his throat and melts into it, arms tightening around Jonghyun’s shoulders. Jonghyun lets his tongue drag across Kibum’s lower lip when Kibum pulls back again, only this time he gently takes Jonghyun’s hands in his and leads him to the living room couch. The next thing Jonghyun knows, Kibum is laid out across the cushions, pulling him down. Jonghyun hovers above him, locking lips with him again, and gives a stifled moan when Kibum’s tongue strokes along his. Kibum hooks his calf over Jonghyun’s thigh and buries a hand in his hair.

They completely lose track of time; Kibum’s kisses are slightly sloppy, wet, and the way he lets his head fall back against the armrest every so often to breathe against Jonghyun’s mouth drives him absolutely crazy. He loses himself to the kiss, to the solid warmth of Kibum beneath him and wishes he never had to come up for air.

Jonghyun doesn’t really know how it ends, only that Kibum’s lids become heavier and heavier, his breathing deeper and deeper until they eventually find sleep, tangled up together on Kibum’s white couch.

The morning is a different story entirely. Jonghyun wakes up first, groggy and disoriented, hanging half off the couch. Something is prodding into his back and when Jonghyun reaches to move it aside, his hand meets curly fur and a cold snout. A quick peak reveals brown fur and Jonghyun groans, hefting himself up while Comme Des jumps off of him with a small yelp. The sound makes Kibum stir and he blinks blearily up at Jonghyun. He seems confused for a moment, and Jonghyun can relate.

“Jjong?” he mumbles in a low, gruff voice. He rubs at his eyes before frowning. “What time is it?”

Jonghyun sits up straighter, fumbling in his pockets for his phone.

“Just after seven.”

Kibum groans, rolling over to bury his face into the couch’s cushions. “My back hurts,” he complains after a moment, shifting slightly.

“Couches aren’t the best beds.”

Kibum hums throatily in agreement. He pauses for a second before adding, “I can’t believe we fell asleep while making out.”

Jonghyun chuckles; Kibum sounds so groggy, and he wonders if he’s like this every morning. “I guess we’ll just have to keep practicing.”

Kibum’s shoulders shake with laughter and Jonghyun pokes his side until he rolls over again.

“We better get started, then.” Kibum fists a hand in Jonghyun’s shirt to pull him down. Jonghyun loses his balance and almost falls flat, propping himself on the side of the couch at the last second. He spends a moment looking down at Kibum, taking in the sight of him like this, sleepy and mussed, his lips seeming plumper and more inviting than ever.

Kibum makes an impatient noise when Jonghyun doesn’t lean down to bridge the distance between them, but Jonghyun only sighs, drawing back.

“I should go if I want to make it back to my dorm to get ready. I have class at nine,” he says regrettably.

Kibum seems disappointed at first but quickly takes on a thoughtful expression. “Or you can stay a little longer and let me lend you some clothes.” He raises an eyebrow at Jonghyun and shifts on the couch, letting one of his legs fall off the edge as he splays himself out a little more. As if Jonghyun needed any more incentive to agree to stay.

He crawls over Kibum slowly, pretending to seriously ponder the suggestion. “I guess that could work.”

“Ass,” Kibum slurs, but he’s chuckling as he says it so Jonghyun isn’t too worried. He has a soft spot for making Kibum laugh, and it means so much more now that they’re about to kiss. It’s intimate and comfortable in a way Jonghyun could only ever hope for and when he finally leans down to press his lips to Kibum’s, he’s chuckling too.

Kibum keeps his tongue and lips thoroughly occupied for the next hour, so much that they actually feel a little numb by the time they finally pull apart. And yet, Jonghyun would gladly spend another hour just like this. They both have places to be, unfortunately.

“I really should go, now,” Jonghyun mumbles through swollen lips.

Kibum runs a hand through his own hair, looking more dishevelled than ever and Jonghyun feels a tug in his chest because this is partly his doing. “Yeah, okay,” he speaks breathily. He tries to sit up, only to smile when Jonghyun doesn’t move off of him. “You need to get off me for that.”

“Suddenly I don’t want to anymore.”

Kibum tilts his chin up to bump noses with him. “Go to school,” he tells Jonghyun softly.

Jonghyun finally extracts himself from the couch with a sigh. He stumbles a bit when Comme Des and Garçons suddenly swarm at his feet, demanding attention. Jonghyun takes a few moments to pet them, cooing when Comme Des falls to his side and bears his stomach for more scratching. Kibum watches them from the couch, propped up on his elbow.

“I’m going to take a quick shower,” Jonghyun announces, “I’ll be right out.”

Kibum nods and calls his dogs to him, leaving Jonghyun to get ready. It only takes him a few minutes and by the time he steps out of the shower, wrapping a towel around himself before peeking out of the bathroom, he finds that Kibum has already laid out some clothes for him on his bed.

The jeans Kibum has picked out fit him surprisingly well at the waist, although they pool a bit at his ankles. He then pulls on the white, jersey-style shirt and, after a quick glance in the mirror, he has to admit Kibum has nailed his style.

Kibum is puttering around his kitchen when Jonghyun ventures out. Kibum pauses to look him up and down, as though assessing his own choice of clothing for him.

“Looks good,” he finally states. “Do you want some breakfast?”

Jonghyun shakes his head. “I should go if I want to make it in time, but thanks. And thank you for the clothes.”

“Okay,” Kibum says, walking up to him to give him a proper goodbye. “Thanks for coming over last night.”

Jonghyun chuckles, placing a hand on Kibum’s waist. “My pleasure,” he answers. “I’ll see you soon?”

Kibum nods, smiling when Jonghyun suddenly puckers his lips for a kiss. Kibum leans forward to oblige him, pecking his lips with a smack.

“Now go,” he orders, turning Jonghyun around towards the hallway and patting his ass. Jonghyun chuckles again at the playful touch and wanders down the hallway feeling slightly dazed, like he can’t quite wrap his head around the past few hours.

The feeling lingers all the way to school; Jonghyun somehow feels like he’s floating more than walking. His expression must give it away, because Taemin arches an eyebrow when he takes a seat next to him in their Japanese lecture room.

Taemin’s gaze then drifts down to his shirt and he frowns at it.

“Is that…” he starts, tilting his head to the side, “Key-hyung’s shirt?”

Jonghyun stubbornly ignores the way his cheeks heat up at the comment. “Maybe.”

“You spent the night?”

Jonghyun is positive he must be blushing by now. “Maybe,” he repeats. As amazing as the previous night had been, Jonghyun doesn’t think he’s ready to talk about it openly just yet.

“Right,” Taemin mutters skeptically. They both go quiet for a moment until Taemin speaks up again, thoughtfully changing the subject. “I don’t know if hyung told you but his company is holding a concert in Seoul soon. He usually invites me backstage with him, and I’m sure he could get you in, too. It’s next Friday.”

Jonghyun had never been to an all-idol concert before and he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to finally see Key in action.

“No, he hasn’t mentioned anything. I’d love to, though,” Jonghyun confesses.

“Or I could try to sneak you in and surprise him,” Taemin ponders with a wide grin. “I bet his face would be priceless. We always go out to eat after, you should come to that too.”

The teacher walks up to the board to start the lesson, so Jonghyun lowers his voice to a whisper.

“That sounds pretty great, actually.”
