'hey your glass is empty / it's a hell of a long way home / why don't you let me take you / it's no good to go alone'
She found him sitting alone at the bar, empty shot glass in hand and a scowl on his face. He didn't know she was there; he was too lost in his own mind to notice. Gracefully, she walked up next to him and smelled the alcohol seeping through his skin. It was only when she gently placed her hand on his forearm did he look up at her.
He stopped counting his drinks after a certain number, but he couldn't remember what that number was. That was his plan, though, to forget. He came close; he forgot almost everything. Everything…but her. He couldn't bring himself to forget how her brown eyes looked into his with clarity or how she occasionally threw a flirtatious smirk in his direction. Couldn’t forget the stolen conversations in the lounge or the silent moments around the mess table. He remembered every thing about her, but he wanted to forget.
'I don't have to pretend / she doesn't expect it from me'
Her hand brought him out of his thoughts and he became angry. Not because she was there, but because she was seeing him like this. When he looked up and met her gaze, he could see a sweet sadness in her eyes, but no pity. His anger ebbed with him knowing that she understood why he was here.
She took his arm, spun him away from the bar, and helped him to his feet. He didn't fight her in the task of getting him back to Serenity. Leaning into him, she placed her left hand on the small of his back and her right on his arm and directed him out into the darkness. Slowly, they stumbled their way towards home.
They reached the bay doors and she pulled away to open the ship. As the ramp lowered, she returned to his side and they continued inside together. Once inside, she led him to the lounge outside the infirmary. He understood; in his inebriated state, he wouldn’t be able to make it down into his bunk without hurting himself. So, he just sat down on the couch and waited for her to leave him.
But she didn’t. Instead, she stood in the empty space between his legs. With her so close, he could smell her sweet scent and forgot why he wanted to forget her in the first place. He drew her closer by placing his hands on the back of her thighs and nuzzling his face into her stomach. In turn, she threaded her hands through his hair and sighed.
'who's there that makes you so afraid / you're shaken to the bone / and I don't understand / you deserve so much more than this'
There was too much to say between them, but neither could find the words. He didn’t understand why she was willing to comfort him, to be with him. She deserved more than a hun dan like him, more than the meager life he can offer. He knew he wasn’t good enough to have her so he went to the bar to drink her away.
She could feel him trying to cut himself off from her. But she was still drawn to him, still wanted him with her entire being. Somehow, he filled in her missing pieces and made her feel whole. She couldn’t let go for the same reason he couldn’t forget-she didn’t want to.
After an eternity of standing there together, she lowered herself to his eye-level. Never looking away from his clear blue eyes, she cupped her hand against his jaw and lightly brushed his cheek with her thumb. He turned his head slightly to kiss the inside of her palm. She leaned in closer and placed a gentle kiss upon his lips. It was so soft that he questioned if she was just a ghost.
Please, don't let me forget this, he thought to himself when their mouths parted.
"I won't," she whispered against his lips.
'so just let me try / and I will be good to you / just let me try / and I will be there for you / I'll show you why / you're so much more than good enough...'
