Author’s Notes: Takes place after 'Small Favor' but before 'Changes'. A pressy fic for zaa_lord Unbetaed, un grammar smacked and the muns not played by me did not OK their actions, though they are used with great love and care. It’s a present, after all. I have no idea if this will be canon for our RP or not, or if it even fits the timeline, it was just a cute idea I had to make someone smile, I hope. ;)

The frantic banging on his apartment door jolted Harry Dresden out of his semi-slumber. Mouse woofed gently and lumbered over to the door, his head tilting curiously.

Harry raised himself from the couch as the banging rang out again. “Mr. Dresden! I need to talk to you, please!” A familiar young voice came though the door. Mouse started wagging his tail right away.

A firm tug or six forced open Harry’s door and he looked down to see the Archive staring up at him. “Ivy.” He said, trying to hide the confusion in his voice. “Hello. Would you like to come in?”

“Yes, thank you.” The just barely teen-aged girl rushed into Harry’s living room. Her blond hair was not so patchy anymore and cut into a neat no-nonsense pixie cut. The scars from her time with Nicodemus had nearly faded. She sat herself on the couch and pouted. Yes, the Archive was pouting.

“What’s wrong?” Harry half yawned as he and Mouse made their way over to the little girl. the wizard looked over the uniform Ivy was wearing. “And what are you wearing?”

“He made me go to school!” Tears started falling from Ivy’s eyes then. Huge shining tears coupled with gasping sobs. “And he made me change my name!”

Harry winced. He didn’t like the idea of The Archive living with John Marcone much, but he had to admit that was the one place in the world she’d be safest. Marcone never let something valuable to him fall to harm without one hell of a fight. “What’s your name?” Harry asked gentle as he sat down next to her.

“Sofia Antonia.” Ivy spat out like it was truly horrible. Mouse whined and rested his chin on the girl’s lap. “Your doggy got big.” She commented before she started patting Mouse’s head.

“How did you know I...?” Harry started, then shook his head. Archive...of course. “It’s a beautiful name.” He said encouragingly. “And I like your hair.” Harry said, brushing at it gently with his fingers.

Ivy sniffled some more, though showering affection on the big shaggy dog was making her feel a bit better. “Thank you.” She said softly.

After a long moment, Harry sighed. “Is he treating you right?” She nodded. “Getting three squares?” Another nod. “You doing well in school?” That earned him a glare. “Oh, right.” He said, his hands held up defensively. “All human knowledge. Of course you are.”

Ivy shuddered a bit. “He is a...very good father.” She said, idly toying with the pendant around her neck that John had given her months ago.

“But?” Harry asked, watching her touch the necklace.

Ivy shook her head. “No buts. He is everything a normal child could want.”

“But you’re not happy?” Harry asked.

“I am never happy.” Ivy pointed out as she looked up at Harry. “Would you be, if you were me?”

Harry sighed, looking down at Mouse as though the big dog could offer him some help. Mouse seemed to shrug like he was just as lost. Can dogs even do that?

Ivy continued to tug at the triple rings of gold around her neck. “Do you want me to talk to him?” Harry asked, reaching out to stop her. In an instant he flinched, picking up on the power Marcone has literally dumped into the pendant months ago. He dropped it and shook his head roughly. “Where’d you get that?” He asked before she could answer the first question.

“He gave it to me to stop the nightmares.” Ivy said. It wasn’t a lie, and it wasn’t betraying neutral ground, either. Not technically. She didn’t tell Harry that John was the one who’d turned the pendant into a protection charm with more mojo than should be slung around a child’s neck. “And...yes please.” She said as she hid the pendant under her sweater. Then she reached out and hugged Harry tightly. “Thank you.”

Harry chuckled, gently stroking her hair. Now he had to go visit Marcone. Great. The things he did for kids. “Don’t mention it, Sofie.”
