Dedicated to 2nd Toshie, because she's made me actually finish this bloody series! Thanks sweetie!!! :D
There were some things you just didn’t expect to see. The Doctor drunk? Well that was just one of them…..
Jack smiled, his eyes fixed on the dance floor as he watched the Doctor throw his body around to the music. Abba to be precise. Apparently, they were his favourite. Or at least they sounded like it, since he was singing the lyrics at full volume.
“DANCING QUEEN! Feel the beat from the tambourine! Ohhhhhhhhhhh!”
He’d never managed to get a time lord drunk, so he hadn’t known what to expect. He’d also expected it to be pretty difficult, since well; being such a superior race you’d think they would be pretty resistant to alcohol. Unfortunately, he was wrong. It seemed two glasses of champagne was all it took.
Jack laughed, watching an embarrassed Donna drag the Doctor off, much to his disgust. Reaching forward, he grabbed his champagne glass and drained it, turning to his left to pretend to listen to the story of their wedding cake that Ianto’s mother was eagerly telling them.
“She was absolutely determined to put some pink icing on that bloody cake too! I told her, didn’t I, Thomas? I said that it wouldn’t go with the wedding theme since everything else was blue. Well that started something else didn’t it, because then she started telling me that-” Jack switched off again after that, turning his attention to his partner, who was sat beside him, jacket hung delicately over the back of his chair. He, unlike Jack was listening intently to his mother, his lips cracked into a smile as he nodded and answered in all the right places. Jack loved watching him like this, when he didn’t know that Jack was watching……
“Jack!” There was a tap at his shoulder, causing the Captain to turn round. “Do I get my dance with you yet?” Martha smiled, holding out her arm, which was wrapped in the purple silk of her dress.
“Excuse me?” Jack smiled to Ianto and his parents, taking Martha’s hand and walking out onto the floor. The music was slower now, and they settled into a soft rhythm quickly.
“I don’t believe it!” She laughed as they danced round, her hand resting in the middle of his back. “You! You’ve settled down!”
“Well, sometimes the impossible happens.”
“You’re telling me. Then again, when I read the name on the invitation, I wasn’t too surprised.”
“You weren’t?”
“Of course not! He’s who you came back for isn’t he? Really?” She smirked, looking at him happily.
“Yeah. He is.” Jack nodded his eyes warm as he met hers. “I knew it back then too.”
“Good. I could tell when I met him. You have something special right there. Don’t screw it up.”
“I nearly did.” Jack paused, his mind flashing back to that day with the Weevil and the girl in the alley, remembering the pain he’d caused Ianto. “Never again though.”
“Mind if I borrow him off you, Martha?” Ianto smiled, standing next to them. Martha laughed, letting go of Jack and moving back to Tom, leaving Ianto to wrap his arms around Jack. “I managed to escape from my mother.” He beamed, indicating over to where his parents had started to dance.
“About time. I’m not used to seeing them like this though. Seems like love is in the air.” Jack glanced around at the couples swaying next to him, smiling when he glanced at Tosh and Owen, Tosh laughing as Owen span her around dramatically. “God what’s happened to us all?”
“I think we’ve remembered something.” Ianto smiled, kissing his neck. “We remembered that we still have a right to be human.”
The reception drew on, the disco lights springing into life as soon as it became dusky outside. Embarrassing pop tunes of yesteryear blasted from the DJ’s booth, giving Owen a chance to do some sad attempt at “Saturday Night Fever” to impress Tosh. Not that he needed to Ianto had noticed, after all, they were officially a couple now. Owen had even moved in.
Ianto hadn’t seen his parents this happy in years; in fact he hadn’t seen anyone so happy in such a long time. Gwen and Rhys were gazing blissfully (if slightly drunkly) into each others eyes, his father had started to “jive” on the dance floor, and Jack had been whisked away by the Doctor, who was twirling him round with wild abandon.
“I haven’t danced like this since I visited Delta Nine! Have you been there Jack?! Oh its amazing, dance floors everywhere, big music culture. I guess it’s because they have eight arms to play with eh?!” The time lord yelled above the music, tugging at Jack’s arms with the music.
“Don’t you think you need a sit down?” Jack laughed.
“Sit down? With these moves?” The Doctor grinned, pausing to wiggle his hips. “You wouldn’t want that Jack!”
“I’m sure I wouldn’t”
“Cheeky” Don’t forget you Ivan over there…..”
“Ianto.” Jack laughed, his eyes surprised as The Doctor’s hands were on his shoulders.
“Ahh yes! Ianto of course! Come on Jack! Danzen!” And before he knew it, the Captain was pulled into a conga line for two……
“I never thought I’d see it.” A southern accent laughed, as Ianto watched Donna sit beside him. “The Doctor like this I mean. Then again he’s mad enough without the alcohol!”
“How long have you been travelling with him?”
“Oh god, I dunno. You lose all track of time in that blue box of his!” She smiled, turning away. “Anyway, why are we talking about me? This is your big day!”
“I know that.” Ianto smiled, looking back to Jack on the dance floor.
“It’s been good though, hasn’t it?”
“Yeah it has. There’s just been so much happening; it hasn’t really sunk in yet. I don’t really know how to feel.”
“Oh forget that! This is the one night where you don’t have to feel!” She beamed, handing him a glass of champagne. “Get this champers down your neck and enjoy it!”
And he did just that. Ianto realised he was too busy trying to analyse and categorise his own wedding like he did everything else, that he’d forgotten what it all meant. Him and Jack, they’d done it. They had committed, told the world how much they loved each other. They’d sworn to stay together, to love each other, to be as normal couple as torchwood would allow. Wasn’t that worth celebrating? After all, it was moments like this that Torchwood was protecting………
The night dissolved into alcohol, laughter and smiles. Donna ended up booking two rooms in the hotel for her and the Doctor, Owen and Rhys helping her moves him upstairs after he had passed out.
“I’m not taking his clothes off though! No one wants to see that!” She protested as the lift door’s closed.
Shortly after Gwen and Rhys left, followed by Martha and Tom and then Ianto’s parents, the woman kissing them, the men shaking their hands proudly. Over the next half hour, the rest of the guests followed suit, until Ianto and Jack were left slumped in their seats sipping the last of the champagne with Tosh and Owen.
“Good night.” Owen nodded, loosening his tie. “Shame I couldn’t drink like the rest of you.”
“But you were here.” Ianto smiled. “That meant the most.”
“I’ll tell you something though.” Jack laughed, finishing off his drink and putting the glass down beside him decisively. “I’m not doing this again in a hurry.”
“Ahhh you might have to, Jack.” Owen half laughed, his voice quiet.
“Oh very funny Owen, but I think we’re going to be together for a while.” Ianto quipped.
“No I don’t mean that.” The young doctor smiled, taking Tosh’s hand in his. “You see……me and Toshie……..Well we wanted you to be the first to know.”
“You’re not….” Ianto gasped, unable to finish his sentence. “Tosh, is this true?”
“Yup.” She beamed, her hair hiding her face.
“Oh Tosh!” This time it was Ianto’s turn to leap forward and grab them both into a crushing hug, his mouth half open in shock, half in laughter. Jack soon followed, and the room was suddenly enveloped back into noise as the four of them chatted excitedly.
An hour later, they had been unceremoniously thrown out of the dance hall and forced to say goodbye, Jack and Ianto heading upstairs to the luxury suite they had booked for the night. Climbing into bed beside his partner, Ianto felt the warm, bare arms fold their way around his chest in a way that had become so familiar.
“Thank you.” Jack whispered, kissing just below his ear.
“For what?”
“Where do I start? For saying yes, for loving me, for accepting my ring, for accepting me. You turned my life around Yan.”
“And you gave me mine back.” Ianto said softly, turning round his arms so he could look him in the eye. “I think we’re even you know.”
“God I love you.” The Captain laughed, moving his face closer for a kiss. “You know that right?”
“I may have noticed. I suppose I love you too.” Another kiss.
“If you love me now……..” Jack smirked, pressing a line of kissing down the younger man’s neck. “Imagine how much you’ll love me in half an hour.”
