Get out of Hell free card

It's a true fact: my wife's grandmother has an indulgence from the Pope.

Also true: My grandmother married a man whose children think it's okay to say "nigger" at the dinner table.

racist, family, pope, indulgence, weird relatives

Really, it's more of a get-out-of-purgatory-free card.

No kidding? I thought those were long gone by Vatican 2.

It took me more than 2 months to get my current roommate (German-Polish-mafiosi background) to stop droppıng the word "nigger" ın every other senetence. I consider this to be one of my major achievements for the year.

The indulgence is from Pope Paul VI -- it's older than I am!

i gotcha.
But!
please read: "I thought those were long gone" as "was kinda hoping those were long gone"
I did some research (asked my mom, who's a catholic theo teacher) who tells me that not only are indulgences still around, but every Easter season the diocese requires them to put an announcement in their weekly bulletin that offers an indulgence to anyone who helps out with the coming confirmation class.
Of course, there's a list of requirements that includes confession.
