I'm at the age where I'm in the 'middle'. In addition to having friends my own age, I have older friends (in their 40s and 50s), and younger friends (in their 20s

Both my parents worked, as well, so part of my learning was out of necessity, I'll admit that. I was a latchkey kid; my dad worked out of town for weeks, and my mother was gone from 7am to 5pm on weekdays. My sister and I were on our own for much of the time, and I either figured things out, or we starved and were late for school (and god help us if that happened

I agree about a lot of the stuff in your original post, though. And if I hadn't learned anything about cooking when I was a kid, I would have come to New York and done nothing but order out too. My mom, to her credit, wanted us to have life skills, although both my parents felt I shouldn't have to get a job when I was in high school. "You have your whole life to work," they both said. Yeah, I have the rest of my life to work minimum-wage jobs because you thought I'd be a wife and mommy like Mom.
I am one of those kids who wasn't taught how to function in real life =_= I once expressed anger towards my mother for never teaching me how to cook and clean (Tree actually had to teach me how to mop), and somebody basically called me a whiny baby because I never had chores and I should be able to figure things out on my own. Except, y'know, I'm absolutely clueless about certain things, to the point where I don't even know where to start looking for answers. My mother seemed to have this absurd notion that school would teach me all I needed to know about life, but I didn't need to take Home Ec because it was "a useless class" (my high school did actually have Home Ec, or at least a similar course

In your case, I'd place the blame fully on your parents. I agree that it's ridiculous to not teach a kid anything, and then expect them to function they day they walk out the door and into the real world. I also don't believe that a lot of this stuff is intuitive, and there are many things you can't just figure out on your own
