I meant to comment on this earlier. This was an interesting exercise. I'm afraid I don't know what characters you're describing but the contrast is striking. I was struck by the empire's debacle versus the court open for heavy hearts, the pain in the loins and bending the ear gently. There's also a self reflective quality that was great-- can sympathy or empathy exist for enemies, and we are not immortal, fragility strengthens us
Lastly the images of weighing salt and water and quarrying trees was great.
Thank you, the characters don't really exist; I was trying to create them out of the groups of lines (and maybe it is self reflective, splitting on paper or something). Do you set yourself any guidelines when you write? You have some pretty amazing (and incredibly ambitious) writing there.
and maybe it is self reflective, splitting on paper or something Definitely felt that way. You could experiment with that idea.
As for guidelines when I write... I find a lot of the time, I start out creating a specific structure. The words organize themselves around that architecture (hah!). I'm really big on using form to lend more meaning to content. For example, "Digest" started out with just me throwing up random words in a fit of exhaustion. The raw material came from there, I found the structure later. Sometimes it's the other way around. Subject matter, as we've already kind of discussed, is up in the air.
