“Kate?”
The rather pitiful voice wafted up from the edge of the bed and found its way though the pillows Kate had sandwiched her head between. Giving up, she tossed the one on top of her head in the general direction of the voice.
“Kate!” Henry exclaimed in terror.
“Go to sleep, Henry,” Kate replied, burrowing into the duvet.
“It’s really hard and uncomfortable on the couch…”
Kate popped an eye open and instantly regretted it when her field of vision was filled by one very adorable and pleading face. He was wearing the classic puppy eyes and had somehow managed to make it look even more ridiculously cute. She slammed her eyes shut and turned over.
“No.”
“But-“
“There’s a reason you’re on the couch, Foss.” She could practically hear the pout when she used his last name instead of his first.
“I said I was sorry!”
Kate ignored him.
Crickets chirped outside somewhere.
“Kaaaatteeeee…”
And there it was.
She sighed and rolled over, being careful to keep her eyes closed.
“Henry. You are on the couch for a reason. Now, go back to it and sleep.”
“But I can’t!” he cried and Kate could see the face he was making, even with her eyes shut. It was sad how well she had memorized his range of faces.
Rolling over onto her back, she opened her eyes with another sigh. She glanced at the clock and saw that it was just past two in the morning. It was highly unlikely that he’d leave her alone any time soon, and when he did, she probably wouldn’t be able to get anymore sleep anyway, what with the guilt trip he’d laid on her.
Kate sighed again and rubbed her face before looking back at the puppy eyes.
“Fine. But you’re not touching me. At all.” The puppy eyes lit up with joy and Henry quickly clambered up and onto the bed, settling next to her with a happy little sign. Kate nudged him over a bit by poking, and then finally all was still and quiet.
She rolled over and snuggled into the fluffy comforter, and soon she was drifting off.
“Kate?”
For once Kate was glad she slept with extra pillows, as she promptly whacked the offending body, and then slapped a pillow over its mouth.
The crickets outside chirped quietly and soon Henry’s soft snores began, muffled only slightly by the pillow.
