Moving sucks out loud.

But I should have internet back by the day after tomorrow!  Which means that I can stop letting T-Mobile rob me blind just to check my bloody e-mail.  And, you know, get my LJ fix.  But I am getting some writing done, in between watching West Wing episodes.  There's nothing like a little Aaron Sorkin to make your plot bunnies come to life.  That, ( Read more... )

I do have a John playlist, thanks for asking. One of the few rules I imposed on myself was that John had to like them too, so I'm mostly stuck with classic rock, and some blues. Here's my top seven.

Johnny Cash -- Walk the Line
Neil Young -- Heart of Gold
Three Dog Night -- Shambala
Waylon Jennings -- Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line (I was insanely happy when I found this song -- not only the title but it ROCKED and is so John.)
Van Morrison -- Crazy Love (Perfect Mary/John song.)
The Animals -- We Gotta Get Out of this Place (John in Nam song.)
Johnny Nash -- I Can See Clearly Now (For the few times John actually feels optimistic.)

So I'm off to check out your choices -- I really don't know a lot of those songs, but I'm always happy to explore.

I...had no rules. Except that I was fairly broke at the time and needed to already own them. So mine are a little, um, random.

I added Crazy Love (how did I miss that one?) and the Waylon Jennings one and of course the Johnny Cash. I love the man in black.

Thanks!

I have internet! At home!

It occurs to me that a lot of mine were actually Jesus-y. It's not that I think John was very religious, but the ones I picked definitely have a fight-evil-kick-ass overtone.

Also?

I have internet!

I'd probably add Cash - Walk the Line, :-) but I love your mix.

Ugggh! Choosing music is so hard...but I made a mix last year for both Mary and John (http://noirbabalon.livejournal.com/4259.html#cutid1) which was supposed to be from their meeting through to John's loss and two songs for the boys from Mary...my rule was only songs of their era (the 70's), so things like Buckley's The Last Goodbye (which I adore) I couldn't include.

My Song List
Ramblin' Man - Allman Brothers
Lotta Love sung by Nicolette Larson
Over My Head - Fleetwood Mac
She's The One - Bruce Springsteen
Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
Rhumba Girl sung by Nicolette Larson
Black Magic Woman - Santana
All Right Now - Free
Gimme Some Lovin - Spencer Davis Group
Can’t Get Enough - Bad Company
Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Irish Lullaby - Trad
Storms - Fleetwood Mac
Heaven Can Wait by Jim Steinman sung by Meatloaf

Yeah, I kind of skipped over the rules part of that. I'm definitely downloading some of these like right now. It's funny, though, I have Simple Man under Dean's playlist, but I suppose that one could go either way.

Thanks!

:-) Simple Man is definitely the Dean song on that list. It was Mary's choice of song for Dean and the Irish Lullaby was her song for Sam.

My whole premise for the list, was that it was a mix tape John and Mary kept in the Impala and played all the time :-) (which is why Dean is still into mix tapes).

Awww...

I have a whole separate list for Dean and Sam. And plenty more for assorted fictional characters. Some songs just call for it.

I think I got sucked into it when I moved across country. To pass the time listening to music, I picked out songs for characters in books I had read. Mostly Dunnett stuff, but lots of West Wing playlists came out of that, too. Now it's just fun. It helps when you're getting ready to write, certainly.

You should start one! Very good for time wasting.

Mostly I came to look at other people's ideas of playlists.

My musical sources tend to be really esoteric and not at all the kinds of things I think John himself would listen to, and I'm not necessarily one to make mixes...though I do think in terms of music. The title of "Fifty Percent," for example, is the same title of a song from the show Ballroom, in which a widow talks about her middle-aged affair (including such lyrics as: "I don't iron his shirts / or expect his tomorrows" and the final verse is quite obviously inspiration:

Life is anyone's guess
It's a constant surprise
You don't plan to fall in love
But when you fall, you fall.
I'd rather have 50% of him
Or any percent of him
Than all of anybody else...at all.But that's off-topic ( ... )

That looked like a quite a bit of substance to me!

Most of my songs aren't chronologically or aesthetically compatible with John. I just picked them because I think they fit otherwise. Some of them have religious themes, not because I think John was into the Good Book, but because they involve fighting the devil and kicking ass. Here are some of the ones that really feel John-ish to me.

Poor Man's House:
You know you've done enough when every bone is sore.
You know you've prayed enough when you don't ask any more.
You know you're coming to some kind of understanding
When every dream you've dreamed has passed and you're still standing.
I think the rest of the song fits for John and the boys together.

What Sarah Said:
And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today,
As each descending peak on the LCD took you a little farther away from me.
Away from me.
...
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said:
That love is watching someone die.
So who's gonna watch you die?
aka: IMTOD theme ( ... )
