I heard from someone in publishing (it might have been at Clarion) that nowadays awards make no difference to a book's sales...whereas in the old days they did, a great deal.
It seems to me that this may be because the awards are out of tune with the readers. Someone else said that book-buyers tend to be female, and older. If the field is still chasing the young male demographic that has long since vanished into the e-sphere, there may be a mismatch here.
