Well. The Doctor part is not something I could consider OOC at all, or different from how he was in the past. He's a ruthless, lying, arrogant bastard quite a lot of the time. Not -nice- at all. Chaotic good most of the time, but it's his own agenda.

Jack, being a new character -- well, it remains to be seen. I can't say I like this direction, and I don't think it was particularly well developed. Perhaps if they'd managed to have a normal length series it would have been. In any case, it's clearly why Ianto had to die. 1) He wouldn't have allowed Jack to do it and 2) He'd never have forgiven him for it. Gwen I have little hope for, but you'd think Rhys as the resident everyman would have been shocked and apalled as well.

It's possible Rhys didn't know about it. But man.. it would've been so much more interesting if Ianto couldn't stop him (he wasn't there, in the hospital or something) and then it totally screwed up their relationship.

But I think we're supposed to think Jack wouldn't have done it except that he'd just lost Ianto. So he was in the mental state of 'Well, screw it, what's two more people?'

I wonder if Whatshername the temp was supposed to have been Martha's role originally.

The article I read said she was created after Freema was unavailable, so -- maybe? It's hard to say, and it probably depends on what stage of writing they were at when they found they couldn't include Martha.
