Some Thoughts on Awards (and Niches)

Keyan said in a comment on my last post that she heard awards don't make a difference to book sales anymore. I think that was said at Clarion, Keyan. I just can't remember who said it. It may have been editor, agent, or one of our instructors ( Read more... )

I think awards can help... somewhat. I don't know about the genre awards, but the Newbery Award does translate directly into sales. As soon as you win it, the vast majority of the 9000+ public libraries and 90,000+ school libraries in this country will automatically purchase your book.

Now, as for translating into -continuing- sales, can't say much about that.

I think the Newberry award is different. It has broader appeal to the people who actually buy books.

That's what makes the difference, right? If the People Who Buy Books don't think the awards tell them anything, the award will make no difference to sales.

Does being on Oprah's Book Club count as an award? That certainly translates into sales.
