I've posted this on the CBB and thought I may aswell post it here too although it feels a bit cheeky asking for advice when I hardly ever post here

From Innsbruck, it is probably easiest to hire a car (there are several near the Hauptbahnhof, Hertz for sure because we used them two years ago and had to nip into the office in Innsbruck). Alternatively, and I really only recommend if neither of you are happy driving on the Continent, you would want the get the train from Innsbruck to Jenbach and then get the bus from Jenbach Bahnhof to Pertisau...better to leave the "little steam train" and ferry until a day you're not carrying fifty million suitcases and buggies and so on

hmmmm... was planning to fly from Edinburgh to Innsbruck. I'm a happy driver but the major hassle with hired cars is getting suitable car seats with a decent safety record
thanks for the other info though
the problem with August is that my colleagues with school aged kids want time off then so June fits much better from that point of view (and is a bit cheaper as outwith school hols). I guess if we coped with Florida's humidity is September then we'll manage in Austria too
Ooh, now there is that (flying to Innsbruck). I have no idea what facilities are at the airport; we flew in and out of Verona because it was cheaper on air miles ;) I see your point about car seats though...
June was okay, we just spent our time (a) running from shop to shop to avoid getting caught in the downpour (b) spending as much time as possible on the lake/up mountains because of the heat.
There is plenty to do in all the villages and hamlets around the lake, although ferry services tend to finish quite early (5pm-ish) and there is little to do in the evenings...of course with your own apartment and two under-5s this is probably a good thing for you! :)
The Dripping Rock is an easy walk for the first bit but does get very difficult near the Rock itself...I would suggest doing the bit as far as the turnstiles with the children and turning back to view from the lake...unless James still fits into a baby harness (the ones to strap to your back/front)? Then it might be doable

If you fly into Innsbruck there's a shuttle bus to the Hauptbahnhof, then you can take a train to Jenbach & from there it's probably best to get a taxi up to wherever you're staying: it's what we did when on my QG (partly due to the late hour of our arrival) & it wasn't terribly expensive.
The Spar in Pertisau is pretty good on the food-front for the self-catering. There's a slightly bigger one in Maurach (at least, I seem to recall it being bigger) and a fairly-big one in Jenbach.
S'definitely worth getting an Erlebniskarte from the Tourist Information Office - it lets you use lots of things/visit various things For Free, so you very swiftly recover the cost of the card.
Apparently I have forgotten everything. Woe is very much me. If you would like I probably have the booklet I made my exploration group before we went & indeed my exploration report & I'd be willing to email you them - with the bit where they have some pertinent information in...
