What are your favourite books, either of all time or lately?

I'm looking for interesting reading material, as I seem to be gobbling books up lately. I'm currently reading Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen - how I could not have read that earlier in my life, I do not know - and I am utterly in love with the storyline, the authour, and of course ( Read more... )

That's perfect! What genre of literature are these reads?

So, for you, instead of novels you've been consuming fanfic? I went through several years of doing that, and even attempted poorly writing my own pieces of fanfiction, but I gave it all up because the desire to hold a book in my hands (rather than read words off a screen) was overpowering.

Thanks so much for all the recs!

You know, other than reading Archie/Betty & Veronica at my cottage, I have never indulged myself in the comics genre. I think I should. :)

14 books in 4 months 11 days is pretty freakin good. I was an English Major in college and I am on my 3rd. I'm not as disciplined with reading as I should be, since I really enjoy it so much when I actually sit down and do it. I recommend short stories by Raymond Carver and Carson McCullers. As well as the books The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera and The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. Have you read them? I'm currently reading Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami. It's interesting, but I'm having trouble staying interested. It's about the concept of double consciousness and was originally written in Japanese. Murakami is pretty different as far as Japanese writing is concerned. This is the first book I've read by him. Also, I picked up all of Jane Austen's works and started Sense and Sensibility. I hate when I have two things going at once but my mood often dictates what I want to read. As for non-fiction, I've been reading Christopher Hitchens' book God is Not Great, but I think ( ... )

Having completed an english major, what were you principally reading? I've always been curious as to the subject matter in this particular major - does it concentrate on one period and style of writing, or is it all inclusive? I'll never have the opportunity myself to find out because I'm following a Physiology major, but I am curious nonetheless.

Thank you so much for the recommendations; when I'm next at a library, 2nd hand book store and the like, I'll bring my list and see if there's anything available.

How are you enjoying Sense & Sensibility? After I've got a 2-3 book gap between Pride & Prejudice (which I am 10 pgs away from finishing), I'll start another Jane Austen novel. She is absolutely fabulous.

God is not Great is a really good book!
It's really well written and interesting. I admit I skipped a few chapters but I really enjoyed it. Thumbs up!

Steph, do you have a copy of the book? I'm interested in reading it. As an atheist, I take great pleasure in supplying my atheist army with more sound reasons. :)
