Welcome to Jukebox 2014!
Nominations for this exchange will open on the 18th of April, depending on your timezone.
If you're interested in participating, here is a post to talk about songs you want stories for, and gauge or drum up others' interest in those canons.
From
the FAQ, here's what I'm defining as a song.

And the wider the genres, the better. There was a little country last year.

When Blackbirds Fly, by Michael Franks, on Youtube - whimsical and melancholic and bitter all at once. "When blackbirds laugh, it's not because they've been drinking / You're here in my head, but you still haven't said what you're thinking," and "When blackbirds fly, they leave their lovers behind them / It's no surprise, if you're looking for faults you can find them."
The Stranger Song, by Leonard Cohen, on Youtube - surreal, with lovely rhythms and images (Spanish guitar, yes?), "and while he talks his dreams to sleep, you notice there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above his shoulder…", all - apparently - organized around a theme of poker games.
I Feel Possessed, by Crowded House, on Youtube, also with a lovely cover by Oh Mercy, also on Youtube - an old favourite, which to me starts off spooky and yet holds a lot of promise.
Other possibles: Laurie Anderson, more Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon...

Re-nominating The Traitor by Leonard Cohen (actually Martha Wainwright's version) for sure. All the war/judging/traitor metaphors for love gone wrong, I feel like this one could work really well as some kind of historical fic. Plus I like the female narrator version.
When the End of the World Came by the Jane Austen Argument because "When the end of the world came it passed like an awkward remark" is such a brilliant, intriguing opening line to a song.
Still thinking about the rest. Likely Tom Waits and Vienna Teng, but not sure which songs (Kentucky Avenue? Homecoming?). Also considering something ridiculous and melodramatic by Jim Steinman, I bet they'd be fun to write :D

I actually just recommended The Traitor to AlexSeanchai to listen to over on Dreamwidth, because yes! Such a wide range between an epic battle and something deeply personal.
