Sanctuary

I receive a newsletter on a twice weekly basis from Robert Genn. I find that he often hits the proverbial nail on the head.

His 8/7 letter had this quote:

"Everyone needs a sanctuary to gather thoughts and apply personal tools. It's in a sanctuary where a sense of self is daily repaired and polished. Things begin to make sense in a sanctuary. Even for the most limited among us, a sanctuary is where progress is made and work gets done. "

He had moved to Italy to get away from all the hustle and distractions of his normal life. A friend decided that they also needed to move far far away to a rural clime where they will be isolated. In that nest, they believe that they will find the quiet space, physically and mentally, necessary to accomplish their next great project. It hasn't worked so far.

What I have discovered through their struggles is that we may move to our sanctuary, but part of the luggage that we bring are our avoidance mechanisms. I have my studio, but it is located next to the computer room. The computer is part of my process, therefore it is a double edged sword. I need the computer to do part of my work and the computer is the gateway into another land full of distractions and fun.

I may not be able to move to Italy or some remote pastoral setting, therefore I need to find my sanctuary right here. Where oh where do I go?

italy, sanctuary, quiet space
