When I was going to "international" school in China, which completely wasn't international,we had had many debates about Chinese government, the relationship with Japan, Taiwan issue,etc...and what made me really uncomfortable was that Chinese students had too much patrism in thier mind. They loved China too,too much so that they couldn't accept those topics, those bad ones for China. Some of them didn't even try to debate.
Maybe this has nothing to do with Chinese internet ,but I just got these stuffs in my mind so,anyway ,yeah ,,,过年了,春节快乐
I agree, patriotism is so deep in the Chinese as to be blinding at times....
...but then again, one might also say the same about Americans...
(however, I think that the Chinese reference to their "laoxiang" even when they haven't lived there for generations is very different, no American ever feels quite that strongly about their homelands)
Jumping in on the patriotism discussion... I had a LOT of trouble getting most of my students to TALK during the "听说课" I taught most of the time. HOWEVER, the day I made some mention of the Taiwan issue and the US relationship with Taiwan, at leas ONE of them had STRONG NATIONALISTIC views to express.
It was kind of funny. I guess next semester I'm gonna have to go STRAIGHT to the controversial topics to get them riled up enough to speak. :-P
