Yes, in my younger years I did extensive research into multiple religion possibilities, from Wiccan to Buddhism, from Agnosticism to Christianity. In my family, the children get to decide what religion they will choose to practice at the age of thirteen. Nothing is pressed onto them, no pressures, no outside influences. It is all up to them. Your family is very smart for not forcing religion on the children. I was expected to be a Nazarene Christian from the time I was old enough to understand the concept; as it was the religion of choice for generations on my mom's side of the family. My dad has always encouraged me to believe whatever I wanted to, but Mom has pretty much been hellbent on keeping me a Christian.
And life changing experiences can make a nonbeliever a believer; they can also do the opposite.

Yes, very true about that last part. I believe if you force anything that involves personal belief and faith on anybody then it is furthering the risk that they will stray. I am very careful never to shove my beliefs down others throats.

Same here. I kind of think that one of the main points of life is to find what you believe on your own, and I'd never force my beliefs (or lack thereof) on anybody. That's one of the things that made me ditch Christianity, it's too focused on converting everybody to Christians.
