I chose a short personal essay (the literature to writing unit many of my classes are doing) about the Challenger today, because I was pretty sure I could do it in 35 minutes

All your sense of timing and your instincts are still attuned to the old format. Working the new format will be a really conscious thing for you for a while, and thus really distracting. Like trying to take a piece you know in D and play it in D minor instead.
I have faith that you can do it. Don't be too hard on yourself if you slip up now and then for a while, though. I bet all the other teachers are having trouble with it too.
*hug* You're the first person I've heard talk about Challenger who had a personal connection. She and her crew were a great loss.
